Japanese stories, July 2 2005
By A Customer
I loved this movie. I will definitely watch it again! This is a Japanese movie, with a Japanese director made with American Actors. The story is nonlinear which is a great departure from the types of movies north americans watch. The nonlinear style is delightfully disorienting and breathlessly confusing. It is often easy to forget that storytelling in different cultures may vary. Japanese stories tend to unfold in a different manner than american/european. A home is cursed caused by a tragedy from years ago. The height of emotion during the tragedy infects the home like a disease. The emotion flails unrelentlessly, it's powerful and touches every person who is subsequently in this home. The anger is a confused one twisting one way and then another. It doesn't think, plan, analyse it just does, it just exists. This movie, is icy, chilling and disorienting in the most fabulous way. I commend Sarah Michel Geller and Ted Raimi for choosing such an intriguing movie and daring to do something "different" from the normal hollywood claptrap. I notice that others don't review this movie highly. This film is for the film buff in search of something different and new. If you prefer the usual hollywood treatment I wouldn't recommend itto you

a pointless,dull excursion (1.3/5), Aug 13 2007
my friend and i watched the grudge on DVD,and neither one of us was impressed.it was basically a one note movie.i won't go into any further details here.but, basically, whole premise is hard to believe, because once the ghost shows itself,it is not remotely scary, forget about terrifying.the acting was not convincing in the least.i did however like the dark atmosphere of the film, which gave it a sense of foreboding...for all of five minutes, after which the novelty wears off.there are two things which are absolutely terrifying about the whole thing.the first is that i will never get back the minutes of my life spent watching this movie.the second is that someone thought it merited a sequel.(Though i will watch the sequel,on the off chance it is a better movie)as for the grudge itself---beige i.e bland and dull.pointless 1.3*/5 for the 5 minutes of atmosphere.

A sufficient cure for insomnia?, April 9 2005
The idea of a horror movie being so dull that it put me to sleep, and a restful sleep at that, really surprised me, as I like a lot of different film genres including horror and the variety of horror styles. I will try not to repeat what others have said, but essentially I expected better. If you like The Ring you will love The Grudge? What a lie. I did like The Ring, but I don't care much at all for The Grudge. If I was to give The Ring 4 or 5 stars, I could honestly give The Grudge not much more than 1 star. A complete viewing of The Grudge later, did convey to me the basic concept and the essentials of the plot which were intriguing enough. I was left thinking what a great concept was in this movie, yet it was portrayed so lifelessly. The scares... Weren't. Gellar's acting has been better. Pullman's wasn't so bad, but seemed merely workman-like. I think it did so well in the first week or so of initial release to theatres simply because the commercials and trailers were better than the movie they promoted. I do believe that I would likely appreciate much better the original(s) that The Grudge was based on.
