Book Description

Oct 1 1998
Hugh Laurie concocts an uproarious cocktail of comic zingers and over-the-top action in this "ripping spoof of the spy genre" (Vanity Fair) -- the irresistible tale of a former Scots Guard-turned-hired gun, a freelance soldier of fortune who also happens to be one heck of a nice guy.

Cold-blooded murder just isn't Thomas Lang's cup of tea. Offered a bundle to assassinate an American industrialist, he opts to warn the intended victim instead -- a good deed that soon takes a bad turn. Quicker than he can down a shot of his favorite whiskey, Lang is bashing heads with a Buddha statue, matching wits with evil billionaires, and putting his life (among other things) in the hands of a bevy of femmes fatales. Up against rogue CIA agents, wannabe terrorists, and an arms dealer looking to make a high-tech killing, Lang's out to save the leggy lady he has come to love...and prevent an international bloodbath to boot.

Product Description

From School Library Journal

YA. A delightful first novel by the British actor, comedian, and author of the television series "A Bit of Fry and Laurie." In this spoof (of sorts) of the spy genre, Laurie's appealing turns of phrase will grab readers from the first paragraph. Thomas Lang, formerly of the Scots Guard and currently a freelance bodyguard/man for hire, is offered an assassination job. He indignantly refuses, attempts to warn the victim, and is soon embroiled in undercover work for the British government, CIA operatives, arms dealers, and terrorists. Those who enjoy action or spy novels will be swept along in the events. Although somewhat convoluted, the plot is so punctuated with bursts of sly humor that readers won't mind a bit of confusion. The author pokes gentle, good-natured fun at the foibles and characteristics of British and Americans alike, as well as his hero, bureaucrats, terrorists, diplomats, and just about everyone else. In a tone reminiscent of Lawrence Sanders's "McNally" series (Putnam), the light, frothy humor is infectious. A quick read, with an engaging, capable hero and lots of plot twists, for YAs looking for something pleasantly different.?Carol DeAngelo, formerly at Fairfax County Public Library, VA

From Library Journal

Thomas Lang is not exactly James Bond. He has military training and has done some bodyguard work, but on the whole he doesn't care to work too hard. When he is offered a contract on the life of a wealthy London businessman, not only does he turn down the offer, but he attempts to warn the "target" of his danger. This embroils him in a wild plot involving a notorious arms dealer, renegade CIA bigwigs, and a prototype for a military helicopter. There is mystery, intrigue, sex, and violence, all of which Lang tosses off with sarcastic wit and remarkable poise. Laurie's humor hits home. Although the subject is serious, even plausible, much of this comedy-thriller is laugh-out-loud funny and very readable. Highly recommended.?Joanna M. Burkhardt, Univ of Rhode Island Coll. of Continuing Education Lib., Providence

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent hard-boiled novel Jun 26 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Very good, well-written detective thriller. I've read many novels in this genre and really enjoyed _The Gun Seller_; it's a quick, fun, but clever homage/satire of the best kind. In the interest of full disclosure, I must mention that I have an extreme crush on Hugh Laurie. Objectively, though, it's a good read. I was relieved to find his book intelligent and recommendable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why has this not been made into a film Mar 6 2001
Format:Paperback
Just once in a while you amble around a bookshop, quite possibly because you are bored or just to get out of the rain even. You pick books up then put them down because something puts you off about them. And then a book catches your eye.You check out the author "I know this guy,he`s the silly one from Blackadder and Jeeves and Wooster!" . You pay your money and take the book home. BANG! this book hit me right between the eyes and kept me reading right thru till the early hours of the next day (well 5 a.m. to be precise).Mr Laurie has a knack of making you actually visualise this in a film like capacity and i could almost feel the sensation of sitting down to watch this as a movie. And being a motorcyclist myself his facts in the book concerning the aforementioned transport are spot on , BUY THIS BOOK YOU WONT REGRET IT. Another book as soon as you are ready Mr Laurie :)

4.0 out of 5 stars A Real Treat for Hugh Laurie Fans! Sep 17 2000
Format:Paperback
If you were a fan of the BBC's 'A Bit of Fry and Laurie,' with it's madcap Monty Python-esque humor, then Laurie's first novel will keep you howling with laughter. Laurie's dry British wit is to be found in abundance in this slightly off center thriller. Thomas Lang, a cynical ex-soldier, is approached by a man who wants to know if he would consider comitting a murder- the man's own. What follows is Lang's frantic, (and hilarious,) search to find out just who can be trusted. From dim-witted hit men to crabby police officers, to world arms dealers, 'Gun Seller' runs the gambit from heart stopping tension to laugh-out-loud humor. As the story progresses the humor does tend to take a backseat which is unfortunate. The plot is good but the book's strength relies on Laurie's irony, sarcasim, and ability to use the English language in print as well as he does in performance. More than worth a look if you're a fan of Laurie or if you enjoy well written comedy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great start, but flags a bit as you go
Entertaining, with laugh-out-loud sections, but the plot gets very muddy by the end. I hope Hugh Laurie keeps writing -- I think he will only improve over time.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm a huge fan of Hugh Laurie's, but...
Honestly, for at least 150 pages, I was completely captivated by the narrator's uncanny sense of humour and his way of describing the action. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad at all...
Enjoyable if rather violent foray into writing by the multi-talented Hugh Laurie. Was good for several evenings light reading. Most of the satire came off quite well, I thought. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, Fun in the Style of Hardboiled Detectives

2.0 out of 5 stars Unmemorable
Not really the up-to-snuff, top drawer Brit humour we expect from Hugh Laurie. I'm writing this 6 months after reading the book, and really I remember very little of the book. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Allow me one little gripe...
As GWB would say, make no mistake: this is a very enjoyable read. The plot is suspenseful, the characters interesting, and the humorous asides are just that. Read more
