Product Description

The landmark general reference Bible that offers the full text of the New Revised Standard Version, now completely revised and updated by leading biblical scholars, including, new introductions and notes, diagrams, charts and maps––25% revised or new material.

After 10 years of new archeological discoveries and changes in biblical studies, it was time for an overhaul of this classic reference work.

With the guidance of the Society of Biblical Literature, an organization of the best biblical scholars world wide, we have selected Dean of Yale Divinity School, Harold Attridge, to oversee the Study Bible's updating and revision.

• The fundamental strengths of the first HCSB remain . . .

up–to–date introductions to the Biblical books, based on the latest critical scholarship, by leading experts in the field

concise notes, clearly explaining names, dates, places, obscure terms, and other difficulties in reading the Biblical text

careful analysis of the structure of Biblical books

abundant maps, tables, and charts to enable the reader to understand the context of the Bible, and to see the relationship among its parts.

• But, in this new revised edition . . .

Every introduction, essay, map, illustration and explanatory note has been reviewed and updated, and new material added. For instance,

There are newly commissioned introductory essays on

the archaeology of ancient Israel and the New Testament world,

the religion of ancient Israel,

the social and historical context of each book of the Bible, and

on Biblical interpretation

There are completely new introductions and notes for many of the books in the Bible, plus a full revision and updating of all others.

Of special interest are:

The literary history of the Pentateuch (those books between the Old and New Testament that Catholics include in their Bible)

More references to ancient non–Biblical sources which seem to parallel books in the Bible like the Gnostic gospels uncovered in Egypt or the famous scrolls found near the Dead Sea in Israel.

And, more comprehensive attention to the interrelationship of Old and New Testaments

4.0 out of 5 stars Mildly disappointed but I'll keep it, May 18 2012

I chose this study Bible as my first one as it is supposed to have a good scholarly background and it is the NRSV, my favourite contemporary translation. I found that it was a little thin on resources really - very few tables, outlines etc. I do like the extensive resource on OT quotes in the NT though. The concordance is all right, although again a little thin and the maps are good. There is no dictionary. As for cross references, I personally prefer them adjacent to the text or separate but they are buried in the notes below the text which makes it more work to find them and don't always seem that comprehensive. The font is a bit small/light for seniors, but I can't say other reviews had not warned me about that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent edition for a very good price, Feb 2 2012
This review is from: The Harpercollins Study Bible: Fully Revised & Updated (Hardcover)
I highly recommned this version of the Bible not only to those who are doing their studies in Theology. It contains historical and archaeological explanations at the beginning of each book as well as conveniently located notes at the bottom of the pages. It does not have old English, hard to understand and pronounce words. The hard cover is a good idea and the price was fantastic.

The Harper Collins editors are to be congratulated from producing an edition largely free of doctrinal bias, and based on modern scholarship including e.g. extensive revisions of Samuel based on the Dead Sea Scrolls. Commentary on Genesis 1:1 suggests an alternative to the received translation of "In the beginning God created" as "In the beginning when God began to create." A gloss in Kings implies that when Elijah mocks the priests of Baal, rather than suggesting that Baal does not answer because he is 'journeying,' rather that he's taking a dump. Many other passages have similarly illuminating commentary.

The physical layout is unfortunate in one respect. The text appears above, with commentary below. Thus the eye must skip back and forth, which impedes forward movement through the text. The new annotated edition of Darwin's On the Origin of Species solves this problem by printing the First Edition text [which is of course not available for the Bible] on either side of the center divide, with keyed commentary in the outer margins. As so often in the past, biblical scholars could learn at thing or two from evolutionary scholars.

NRSV had employed gender-neutral language, such that explicitly masculine pronouns in Latin or Greek are properly interpreted as a convention for the inclusive generic and printed so. This leads to a very repetitive use of superscripts for many 'he' and 'him's, again a distraction to forward movement.
