3.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Premise Dec 21 2011
By Lydia - Novel Escapes TOP 500 REVIEWER
I had anticipated reading The Hating Game since being contacted by Talli Roland about reviewing her debut novel. Loving almost anything reality TV related, the premise of this novel intrigued me and I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into it, and I wasn't disappointed. This novel was fast paced, easy to read and frequently amusing. I was eager to discover what was going to happen and was rooting for Mattie to figure everything out.

At times I loved Mattie's take no prisoners attitude both professionally and in her personal life, but other times it grated on me, from how she treated her best friend and her exes. I had hoped she would soften a bit earlier in the process, but somehow I still cheered for her and wanted her to want more from her life, to break down the barriers she had and in the end I wasn't disappointed by her transformation and realizations.

Mattie's observations throughout the book made me chuckle frequently and I found even her most insensitive thoughts could be quite amusing at times. I enjoyed the quirky secondary characters and thought the alternating perspectives from character to character provided a solid grasp on their thoughts and motives.

The Hating Game made me wonder about the reality TV process and just how far the shows would go for ratings and I'm wondering if I'll view them differently now when I leap back into them in the new year. I also wondered throughout the novel about being in Mattie's position and having to interact with ex boyfriends I had no desire to see again - or who might have some bones to pick with me. The entire premise of this novel was so interesting that I wonder how the scenario would play out on an actual reality TV show!

I look forward to more from Talli Roland!

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever Premise! Dec 1 2010
By Theresa Milstein - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
The first line hooked me:

"`IF I GET PNEUMONIA, HE'S GOING to pay,' Mattie Johns muttered as she gripped the chains of the dunk- tank swing and looked down into the murky water."

The first scene already had me laughing so I was hooked. The story unfolds seamlessly. When I began the book, it was a busy time for me but I made time to read. I finished it in four days.

At first I found Mattie unlikeable. But even in the beginning, I could detect her vulnerability within her uncompromising exterior. This is a woman who wants to be in control, so it's interesting to see how she grows as her life becomes more and more out of her control.

Every character has depth in this story, which is a feat because there are quite a few important characters. Too many books have a friend who is little more than a sidekick, only existing to provide humor. I liked the best friend and learned much about the main character through her. The ex/love interest isn't too domineering or too wimpy. I found myself rooting for him early on, even when Mattie seemed to have good reasons to stay away.

The premise is clever. Reality TV with all the behind the scenes backstabbing exists in spades. I had a hard time putting the book down, wondering what would happen next. No predictability here.

This book is appealing to read and would make a great film. I could see the movie version clearly - probably because much of the time the reality television show is filming. And if this becomes a movie, I will definitely see it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it! A wacky, fun rom-com Dec 1 2010
By India M. Drummond - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
Top 5 reasons anyone would enjoy The Hating Game:

5. It's original. So many rom-com/chick lit books are all the same. I've never seen anything like The Hating Game, and yet it still has the fun, feel-good factor you want from a rom-com.
4. No stereotyped characters, no women that are too stupid to live, no men with throbbing, well, anything. The main character is anything but loveable in the beginning, and yet I connected with her. I really enjoyed the journey she went on in the book. This book is fun, wacky, and sometimes sweet, but it also has depth.
3. A hilarious look behind the scenes of a reality TV show. If you've ever watched a show like Four Weddings or The Bachelor and felt smugly superior, then this book will make you laugh out loud.
2. It's just a hella good read.
1. Every time someone buys a copy of The Hating Game, a TV producer chokes on a sausage. (Okay, that's only going to be funny if you've read the book-So go read it!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and entertaining Nov. 25 2010
By Gabriela L. Carvalho - Published on

Talli Roland's "The Hating Game" is all you could expect from a good romantic comedy: fun, light, sweet and highly entertaining. Her story-telling is great (kudos for the stats on the beginning of each chapter, which are hilarious), her characters are lovable and her wit and quick pace turn this book into a real page-turner. It's a must-read for anyone who loves authors like Sophie Kinsella, Helen Fielding and Marian Keyes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, exciting and feel good Nov. 30 2010
By S. Callejo Paterson - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was very original, funny, witty, sarcastic and feel good. I loved the storyline and by the end of it I most definitely wanted to read more of Talli Roland's books.
The heroine, Mattie, was proof of how first impressions are deceitful. Angry with the world at first, I enjoyed her evolution as she gradually lowers the shield and the reader gets to know her, understand her, and unavoidably become attached to her as the story develops.
The story has so many twists and surprises I couldn't stop turning pages and opening my eyes wide as another unexpected event turned up, which meant I was never certain if I'd get the happy ending I expect from a chick-lit and I felt the excitement building as I read on.
The Hating Game left in me a feeling of excitement and happiness which is what I really want when I read a book. My cheeks ached from smiling right from the start.
I'll be looking forward to the author's next book.
