3.0 out of 5 stars Better Than Nothing, Jun 7 2005

Laura is a brilliant singer and arranger; she is simultaneously modern and recasting old-time country music. So remarkable for a New Jersey DJ! If you are new to Laura, you should start with either of her full-length CDs. Both are superb. This short set is a grouping of demos that are more primitive than her work on the other CDs. Thanks to her lovely voice and quirky song choices, this is worth owning, but it is clearly second to her better work.

5.0 out of 5 stars jack ruby killed lee harvey, the tv proved he did, Jun 25 2005

i agree that with the previous review that this recording is more primitive than laura's full-length (many years later) albums. but i disagree that fact makes this ep sound worse. in all honesty, i much prefer the production quality of this release than i do her latest 'humming by the flowered vine', which i would argue is a bit over-produced. hearing '14th street' live, for instance, is MUCH better than the tricked-out album version.

but this disc is short, so the best disc to start with is probably her last album 'when the roses bloom again' which is incredible.

but, again, i don't think this ep should be considered second class. songs like 'cellar door' and 'lee harvey was a friend of mine' remain some of my favorites.

ps. if you really like laura cantrell, check out 'the guitar' on they might be giant's 1992 album 'apollo 18' which features laura in an unusual role.
