3.0 out of 5 stars Not as impressive as I'd hoped, Mar 18 2009
By Ralph Emerson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Henry Altemus Company: A History and Pictorial Bibliography (Paperback)
I do not sell used books, I collect them. Actually I collect altemus books. I have collected about 300 in 2 or 3 years. If you sell them, then this book would be helpful, but not perfect. It basically takes the back pages of all the altemus books, where they list the (at the time) current series being sold, and combines the information in one book. So it does combine a ton of information into one place for you; which stories were written in which series, which covers for what time periods, etc... Unfortunately, not all the information is accurate or included - go to his website for example and you will see all of the information added since the book was published. Also, Cary, in my opinion underestimates the "monetary value" of a lot of the altemus books. He seems to lightly discuss what he considers the books to be worth over his years of spending a ton of time hunting and gathering and he fails to consider what the books are actually selling for. I was really hoping for more time spent on the value of books and more accurate information about it when I went to his site. I was also sorely disappointed that there was extremely little time or information devoted to the history of the altemus publishing company itself. The layout of the book was confusing, but once you figured it out, it was quite efficient. I honestly do not believe that the book is worth $70 and I was sorely disappointed to find out that after such a large price tag, I received a flimsy paperback. I do have to admit that if I had not paid $70 for the book, it might have earned a better rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Superb Bibliography, Profusely Illustrated in Color, Nov 11 2005
By F. Krieger "Newport Vintage Books" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Henry Altemus Company: A History and Pictorial Bibliography (Paperback)
With his second comprehensive bibliography, Dr. Sternick follows up his 2003 release of "A Bibliography of 19th Century Children's Series Books" with this superb new work. With a thorough attention to detail, Sternick unveils new insight into the publishing history of the Henry Altemus Co. and unravels the thousands of books and myriad of formats and issues into a clear, concise and effective reference.

Provided with an extensive array of indexes to work from and hundreds of color pictures to refer to, the collector is sure to find the information they need with ease. Anyone who has experienced Sternick's bibliographic prowess in his first work will be even more impressed with this endeavor.

Those who may have considered themselves well versed in the Altemus publishing history and output will walk away from this book with a new-found humbleness at just how much wisdom they have discovered from this sage among bibliographers. To top it off, readers will find pages upon pages of beautiful color images -- this, of course, is just icing on the cake!

Once again Cary Sternick has raised the bar to an even higher standard of excellence.
