Great EP! But why only one bonus track?,
By
This review is from: The Honeydrippers: Volume One (Remastered / Expanded) (Audio CD)
I have now officially bought this EP four times: Once on cassette, then vinyl, then CD, and now finally this remastered CD with one bonus track. Why? Am I nuts? Probably, but the main reason is that I love the music.Originally released in '84 and featuring Robert Plant, Jimmy Page & Jeff Beck, in a lot of ways this was as close to a Zeppelin reunion as we were likely to get in '84. Also featuring Nile Rodgers (guitar), Paul Schaffer (yes, that Paul Schaffer -- keyboards) and Dave Weckl (drums) there is no questioning the talent of these musicians. The original album clocked in at a mere 18 minutes, this reissue adds the bonus track, a live version of "Rockin' At Midnight", bringing it up to 22 minutes. Here's a track breakdown: 1. "I Get A Thrill" -- excellent track, wonderful backing vocal harmonies, a nice fast one to dance to. 2. "Sea of Love" -- everybody knows this lush, elegant slow-dancer. A classic. Lots of strings. Perhaps even better than the Phil Philips original? Maybe, maybe not. You decide. 3. "I Got A Woman" -- A fast, brief (2:55) foray into a Ray Charles hit, its breakneck pace is almost a little too much for me. 4. "Young Boy Blues" -- Side two of the vinyl kicked off with this wonderful slow number. Plant really pours everything he's got into this one. A lot of soul. 5. "Rockin' At Midnight" -- Another great one to dance to, great horns, great guitar solo by Beck. 6. "Rockin' At Midnight (Live)" -- a little bonus track to get the EP up over 20 minutes. Shorter than the studio version of the song by 2 minutes. Would have been nice if there was more bonus material, as I know Plant has performed live with versions of the Honeydrippers since then. This remaster (released in 2007 as part of the Plant remasters) sounds great, and despite the short running time, is worth your cash. It's fun, it's warm, it's a great listening experience and every one of these tracks is a bonafide classic. It's kind of odd hearing Plant's distinctive squeal on these songs, but it actually works. Enjoy. Four stars, but only because I know they could have included more bonus material.

Great fun from the past.,

I bought this EP when it came out in the 80's for many it was a surprize hit. The CD remaster is great. You can hear everything very clearly. Jeff Beck's guitar solo at the end of "rockin at midnight" is vibrant. On the Ep it was faded out. Just a warning, Robbie Blunt is only on the live version and, this is not his first collab' with Mr. Plant despite what it says above. Hey, who ever thought old stuff could sound relevent?

Robert and Jimmy mellow out!,

Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, late of Led Zeppelin, mellow out with some R&B/swing numbers like the Top 10 hit SEA OF LOVE and the Top 20 hit ROCKIN' AT MIDNIGHT. Joining Plant and Page in this ensemble is Nile Rodgers, who himself had chart success with his R&B band Chic. Rodgers had quite a workload with this album and Madonna's LIKE A VIRGIN. It's understandable that Plant and Page declined to carry on with Led Zeppelin after the 1980 death of drummer John Bonham. SOL was made famous originally by Phil Phillips in 1959. The differences between Phillips' recording and the cover are no "buh-buh-buh-bum" in the cover,a key change in the cover and Plant's accenting of some of the lyrics differently than how Phillips did it. I guess that's because Plant is English(as is Page) and Phillips is American(as is Rodgers). ROCKIN' AT MIDNIGHT really swings. It got the lively 1940's sound that the fighting men of World War II were dancing to at clubs. After this album,Plant, whose solo career began in or around 1982,continued going solo. Page formed his third band THE FIRM and released an album in 1985. Recently, the surviving Led Zeppelin members re-formed with a new drummer and are currently on tour.

Love this cd and play it all of the time. Just wish there was more music on it. These guys are great and they need to do more.
