Get the bag. As The Honeymooners continues to get bumped from late-night TV schedules across the nation--by laughably unfunny shows such as Friends and Murphy Brown no less--legions of Honeymoonies will need to get their fix in other ways. This eight-volume set--the Honeymoonie's Holy Grail--contains all 39 episodes from the legendary 1955-1956 season. There's no commentary from some "expert" who compares Ralph to gods from Greek mythology or memories from some assistant producer--it's just the meat, and that's enough to make any fan salivate. This was the only season that The Honeymooners had a life of its own apart from the Jackie Gleason Show, and as much as we tried to welcome the "Lost Episodes" into our family, they very rarely matched the high quality of the classic 39. Rather than sequence them in order, the producers have decided to group them by eight different themes including Ralph's jealous nature, his life at the Gotham Bus Company, his friendship with Norton, domestic troubles, and financial woes. Sometimes this approach is a bit forced, but it does illustrate why The Honeymooners is the ultimate situation comedy: You can show them out of order. No matter what happens to the Bensonhurst foursome, Ralph will still work for the bus company, Norton in the sewer. They'll be struggling to get by, passing the time bowling, shooting pool, arguing with the wives, and dreaming of a better day. And it's in the mundanity of everyday life that The Honeymooners finds boundless humor. Even when the events were anything but mundane--bank robbers, counterfeiters, TV commercials, game shows, golf dates with The Boss--the real story and the best jokes were about the reality of their lives and the realization that, because of marriage and friendship, they didn't really have it so bad after all. The chemistry between Jackie Gleason and Art Carney still amazes after all these years. Audrey Meadows's Alice is the perfect foil for Ralph, stern but sympathetic. And Joyce Randolph's Trixie? Well, let's just call her "earnest." Still, for all of Norton's frenetic energy and Alice's wisdom, the show belongs to Ralph Kramden. Somehow, Gleason took a chauvinistic, paranoid, insensitive, scheming, bitter, loudmouth, underachieving bus driver and made him a hero to millions. --Marc Greilsamer

Description

The immortal Jackie Gleason stars in The Honeymooners, with beloved sidekicks Art Carney, Audrey Meadows and Joyce Randolph.

Since its premiere on October 1, 1955, The Honeymooners has established itself as a cornerstone of American television. Amazing...considering that only 39 full-length classic episodes were filmed, all included in this collection! The brilliant and hilarious interplay between Ralph, Alice, Ed and Trixie set the tone for countless situation comedies through the years, but none have quite captured the sheer magic of the Kramdens and the Nortons struggling to carve out their piece of the American Dream in Brooklyn. This comprehensive DVD collection is an everlasting monument to one of the funniest and most enduring TV shows of all time.

Special DVD Features:

- All 39 timeless, full-length episodes

- The Honeymooners Anniversary Special (DVD version) including rare interviews with the stars

- Original series opening and closings not seen since 1956

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic 39, Jan 17 2004

This review is from: The Honeymooners: Classic 39 Collection [5 Discs] (DVD)
I rated this collection a 4. How kind! This is without question one of the greatest television comedies ever to grace our screens. Saying that, one has to wonder why better care was not taken in the preparation of these classics. When I put the first disc in the DVD player and began watching "TV or Not TV", I noticed as soon as the program opening began that the quality was poor. I'm comparing this to the 1993 release of the classic 39 episodes released by CBS video on 20 video cassettes. Fortunately I still have these videos. The quality is so much better than the DVD's! I watch the DVD's, but if I really want to see this show in all it's glory (best possible picture and sound), I'm watching the video tapes!

3.0 out of 5 stars DVD Quality Laughable, but Great Episodes, Nov 18 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Honeymooners: Classic 39 Collection [5 Discs] (DVD)
The good : all 39 Honeymooners episodes in one collection. The bad : Nothing really done DVD wise to enhance the show. TV or Not TV epsisode has the sound problem, but take a look at the "LULU" Norton Sleepwalking episode. The last 7 minutes of that looks like it was extracted from a silent movie. The makers of this DVD set did nothing to enhance the show technically, but pretty much gave you VHS copies on dvd.

Only saving grace of this collection : The HOneymooners is a great show and it's nice to have all the classic 39 in one set.

4.0 out of 5 stars The greatest sitcom ever, Nov 13 2003

This review is from: The Honeymooners: Classic 39 Collection [5 Discs] (DVD)
This is what longtime fans of "The Honeymooners" have been jonesing for for years: The "Classic 39" on DVD! It's wonderful to have all of the episodes in one set, in broadcast order and, for the most part, looking and sounding great.

That said, Paramount/CBS could have done better. What other reviewers have pointed out about the pilot episode, "TV or Not TV," is true: the audio quality is poor (it sounds like you're listening to the episode underwater) and the picture is scratchy. The other episodes in the collection--at least those I've viewed thus far--are much better, with sound clear enough to hear audience members shift in their seats (when they're not doubled over laughing, of course) and the creaking of the stage floorboards as a actor walks into scene, and crisp black and white film quality. It would have been nice if they'd cleaned up the pilot digitally, but I guess we should be happy that any of these episodes still exist at all, given how many programs from that era are lost forever.

The lack of extras is also noticable. I'm unclear as to why the Anniversary Special has been edited down by more than half--while what's left is still interesting, why not just include the whole special? And the original opening and closing are nice to see, but...that's all you get. No commentary. No freshly produced documentary. No inclusion of other "Honeymooners" material (the reunion special from the '70s, maybe?). Nada.

Still, for anybody who grew up watching this show (as I did during its run in syndication), it's the episodes themselves that we want more than anything else. And now I have those. So color me happy.
