Book Description

After 10 years and 14,000,000 copies sold, the world's bestselling plant book gets a beautiful freshening up, in a companion volume filled with today's most popular plants and up-to-date techniques.

This is what gardeners have been waiting for and will absolutely have to own: the companion to the blockbuster guide they love and have depended on for years. Since the publication of the original House Plant Expert, gardening has evolved and tastes have changed: here, on every lushly illustrated page, is cutting-edge information and the latest trends in gardening. In addition to a widely expanded A to Z of plants, and an in-depth discussion of today's most popular species (such as bonsai, orchids, bromeliads, and herbs), there's inspiring information on a really revolutionary idea: roomscaping, or the art of creating attractive, stylish features in the garden by combining one or more plants with non-living items. Gardeners will see inspiring examples of water and glass gardens and multiplant containers, and even learn how to make a solitary plant stand out.
It may have taken a while to arrive, but The House Plant Expert Two is proof positive that good things come to those who wait!

2.0 out of 5 stars If only I'd known..., July 9 2003
This review is from: The House Plant Expert (Paperback)
If only I'd known that this was one of those books they have lined up at home depot or cashway...full of bits of information for those who really don't know anything, but not really that useful...I would have passed. I admit that I now refer to it occasionally, when I can't find a plant pictured elsewhere or to get a name to reference in another book, but normally it just sits on the shelf. It seems outdated, the pictures are of poor quality, and there's not really enough information about each plant to be that useful to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need to know in one concise volume., Jun 8 2004
This review is from: The House Plant Expert (Paperback)
This beautifully illustrated and photographed book is a very informative and easy to use reference for anyone who wants authentic expert advice on growing and maintaining house plants. This practically organized book is divided into nine readily accessible sections:
* Plants in the Home: serves as an introduction to the book and gives some advice on choosing, buying, housing, and repotting plants, as well as learning the basic rules of care and creating the right growing conditions for your house plants.
* Displaying Indoor Plants: discusses the many considerations needed to be taken into account when keeping plants indoor, including mixing specimens, choosing pots, and selecting the right plant for each room.
* The Classification of House Plants: includes foliage house plants, flowering house plants, flowering pot plants and cacti.
* House Plants A-Z: is the most extensive alphabetized guide on house plants in print in a single volume. Each plant's entry includes its image and/or picture, a description of its most common varieties, details on how to plant, grow and care for it, and a list of the ordinary problems that affect it.
* Plant Care: gives instructions on how to optimize the natural elements that impact the plant's health, including temperature, light, water, humidity, and air.
* Increasing Your Stock: explains how to successfully propagate house plants by using the most suitable reproduction techniques.
* Plant Troubles: presents advice on how to speedily prevent or correct each trouble.
* Dictionary: defines both the technical and the not so technical terms used throughout the book.
* An Index.
This book deserves to be one of the best-sellers on house plants because with its excellent selection of plants common to many countries and its clear, invaluable information it simply is an essential resource for anyone, whether beginner or professional, who wishes to grow and keep beautiful house plants. I assure you that it's a book you will refer to time after time after time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a new Gardener, May 24 2003
By
Valerie Adolph "Coast Journal" (Pacific Northwest) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The House Plant Expert (Paperback)
This is one of a series of gardening books written by Dr Hessayon with the novice gardener in mind , and with the word "Expert" in the title. The reader can choose from The Rock and Water Garden Expert, The Garden DIY Expert (that's a common abbreviation in England for Do It Yourself), The Garden Expert, The Bedding Plant Expert, The Rose Plant Expert, The Lawn Expert, The Tree and Shrub Expert, The Flower Expert, The Fruit Expert, and The Vegetable Expert . Each follows a similar format and there is some overlap between them.

The major part of each book is an alphabetical look at most of the well-known plants in the subject area. Each plant is well illustrated, given its common and Latin name, its appearance is described, and its requirements for heat, light, water etc. listed briefly.

The "Expert" books offer sound basic advice about selecting and repotting plants, plant care, propagation and a section on diagnosing and treating common plant problems.

These are practical, down-to-earth books, mostly for the new gardener. Not even the brownest thumb can go far wrong using the "Expert" books, and The House Plant Expert is said to be the world's best-selling book on houseplants.
