The misconception about this animated film from Disney was that it was a movie for kids--something Victor Hugo never had in mind. In fact, despite a cute brace of singing gargoyles who are Quasimodo's (Tom Hulce) best friends, this version of Hugo's classic tale is really adult entertainment, with a strong set of songs by Alan Menken. The story remains mostly the same (though tricked out with a happier ending than Hugo's): Quasimodo, the ward of repressive monk Frollo, falls for a gypsy girl named Esmerelda (Demi Moore)--though she loves one of the king's guards (Kevin Kline). But they are all put in jeopardy by the wicked Frollo, whose secret passion for Esmerelda leads him to seek her death. At times too dark and even a shade kinky, something that may scare younger viewers. --Marshall Fine

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good DVD Release Jun 16 2013
Format:DVD
I like this movie, but I'm going to focus on the DVD itself as opposed to the actual film.

I don't have a whole to say other than that the movie has a bit of a theater-quality look to it, which I don't mind. The special features are good, but not too extravagant. Some of these features include a sing-along song and a "Making of.." feature with an amusing appearance by Jason Alexander (voice of Hugo) as the host of the feature.

Overall, this DVD edition is pretty good, but nothing too special. However, it's still worth buying.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Hunchback of Notre Dame Nov 18 2007
By Joel
Format:VHS Tape
Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" follows the themes of all of its movies, an outcaste hero, a evil villain and a beautiful heroine. The animation details bring the characters to full life and action, as does the comedy that is supplied by Quasimodo's three gargoyle friends. This being a Disney movie, the characters brake into song every 10 to 15 minutes. The songs add and expand the plot in a way with would catch children's ears. The songs are also sung be the characters voices in real life which adds to the effect. The plot is well developed and the theme of tolerance plays well to parents wanting their children to watch something that "teaches life lessons". I would highly recommend this movie to any parent who wants their kids to enjoy themselves and learn lessons at the same time. As a result, this Disney movie is a Disney classic and can be compared too with the likes of Cinderella and Bambe.
