Product Description

From Library Journal

Wilkes (archaeology, Univ. of London) has tackled the difficult task of presenting a people whose scarce artifacts lack the grandeur of other ancient societies and whose ethnic origins and relationships are still a matter for scholarly debate. The first chapter, a history of Illyrian studies, explains how present-day rivalries among Balkan ethnic groups have turned research into a matter of national pride, with some resultant distortion of facts. Relying on archaeological evidence and classical texts, the author then surveys the history (through late Roman times), material culture, religion, and customs of the tribes residing between the Adriatic and the Danube whom Greeks and Romans called Illyrians. Despite constant references to the region's geography, Wilkes provides only one small map to assist the reader; other titles in this series make much greater use of maps to indicate the locations or movements of peoples and pinpoint sites being discussed. Still, this is recommended for larger public and all academic libraries as a solid survey of the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, July 2 2010
This review is from: The Illyrians (Paperback)
it shows the truth about illyrians and the people that are no more on this earth but Balkan nations have the blood like the Serbs and Croats and bosnians and albanians but those are just talk and not facts to the full but we knew and know albanians are not from the illyrians that they claim and even their own historians say this also as many historians say worldwide they came from azerbaijan then to the balkans the Serbs and Croats were there before the albanians but Albanian people believe in what they think but not lok at true facts like the world sees and knows and for the bosnians well they were Serbians for the most part with some croat and gypsy and turk and so on but mainly Serbs that converted to Islam to be not punished and to get food and all the things you need to survive without fighting so they laid down to the turks for essentials this book hits it dead on to the truth and great explanations about true facts and not fake history.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book..., Jan 2 2002
By
This review is from: The Illyrians (Paperback)
This is a great book!It explains the origins of Bosnians, and many other nations in the Balkans.
Serbian propaganda, and many "so called" historians from neighboring Serbia were spreading many lies about true origins of Bosnian Nation. This book explains in details the earliest inhabitants of Bosnia of whom we have any historical details, and they are Illyrians.,a collection of tribes which covered much of the modern Balkans including Albania and Bosnia.
The archaeological evidence from several sites in Bosnia shows that Illyrians were the stock-breeders specializing in sheep and goats. Also, the archaeological evidence from more than 300 sites in Bosnia shows that Illyrians believed in many gods, and they were very warlike.
A warlike tribe in central Bosnia, the Daesitates, whose last rebellion against the Roman empire was finally crushed in AD 9.
From then on,all the Illyrian lands were firmly under Roman rule, and a network of roads and Roman settlements was gradually established.Several roads ran across Bosnia from the costal town of Solona(near Split):these served as delivery routes for the gold, silver, and lead which were mined in eastern Bosnia in Roman times...I enjoyed reading it very much especially because it talks about origins of many peoples in the Southeastern Europe including Bosnians and Albanians.
