This is the perfect way to hear Madonna: no album filler, just one hit after another. As a singles artist, she works wonders: quick, danceable tunes that are occasionally "controversial" but never set out to change the world (and don't). The Immaculate Collection begins with her earliest work ("Holiday", "Borderline") and matures from there ("Papa Don't Preach", "Like A Prayer"), ending in 1990. The highlight is the inclusion of "Justify My Love", a track recorded specifically for this compilation. One caveat: since Madonna is a true video artist, it'd be even nicer to "see" these songs. --Rob O'Connor

5.0 out of 5 stars Great all the way through! June 16 2012

I understand why people do not like this album. It's full of edits, remixes, tracks mixed with Q-Sound, and some of her hits are missing. I, however, love it. It's the first Madonna album I ever bought so a lot of the versions present on this album are the ones I'm most familiar with. Even though it's a greatest hits collection, it sounds very cohesive and there's a certain magic about it that I don't find on "GHV2" and "Celebration". There's nothing better than 80's Madonna tunes in my opinion. I'm not bothered by the omissions on here because I like the more "Straight to the point" approach. The ones that did not make it on here didn't have the impact of the ones that did. "Justify My Love" and "Rescue Me" are great new additions to this album, and became big hits in their own right.

1. HOLIDAY (#16 US /# 2 UK) - This version is an edit of Jellybean's remix on her "You Can Dance" album.
2. LUCKY STAR (#4 US / #14 UK)
3. BORDERLINE (#10 UK / #2 UK)
4. LIKE A VIRGIN (#1 US / #3 UK) - Edit of Jellybean's Extended Dance Remix.
5. MATERIAL GIRL (#2 US / #3 UK) - Edit of Jellybean's Extended Dance Remix.
6. CRAZY FOR YOU (#1 US / #2 UK)
7. INTO THE GROOVE (#1 UK) - This version is an edit of Shep Pettibone's remix on her "You Can Dance" album.
8. LIVE TO TELL (#1 US / #2 UK)
9. PAPA DON'T PREACH (#1 US / #1 UK)
10. OPEN YOUR HEART (#1 US / #4 UK)
11. LA ISLA BONITA (#1 US / #1 UK)
12. LIKE A PRAYER (#1 US / #1 UK) - Edit of Shep's 12" Dance Mix.
13. EXPRESS YOURSELF (#2 US / #5 UK) - Edit of Shep's Non-Stop Express Mix.
14. CHERISH (#2 UK / #3 US)

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic collection Nov. 12 2006
Format:Audio CD
This is one of the best greatest hits packages out there, and it is certainly better than her later compilation "GHV2". This album contains one hit after another, so the song list is exceptional. If I had to say anything negative about this collection (and I know I don't have to, but I do have one small objection), I would say that it is too bad that "Who's That Girl" was left off, as that is one of my favourite songs of hers (not to mention the fact that it was a #1 single). "Oh Father" is also sadly absent, but I know it is the song that ended her incredible string of consecutive top 10 hits. The fact that this song was not more successful is incomprehensible, as it is one of her best songs.

In any event, this is an excellent compilation of Madonna's earlier hits and contains a version of "Express Yourself" that is better than the original album version. Heck, this is an awesome compilation of 1980's hits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Madonna : The Mother of Re-Invention July 10 2004

Format:Audio CD
This record was the first Madonna album I bought , and I have been a fan ever since!! This woman has to be one of the most influential artists of the eighties , ninties , and the new millenium. She always re-invents herself , reflecting where she is in her life , what issue she wants to tackle , and what it is she wants to say. The album covers her first four studio albums : "Madonna" , "Like A Virgin" , "True Blue" , and "Like A Prayer". Songs she did for movie soundtracks are thrown in the mix also. Such as : "Vision Quest" , "Desperately Seeking Susan" , "At Close Range" , and "Dick Tracy".
"Madonna" was the first album she recorded. It was released in 1983 and included the hits : "Holiday" , "Lucky Star" , and "Borderline". Madonna was a busy gal during this period. She filmed her first two films : "Vision Quest" and "Desperatley Seeking Susan". That meant two more hits were released : "Crazy For You" and "Into The Groove".
"Like A Virgin" , her second album , included the hits : "Material Girl" and the title track. A year after the record was released (in 1984) , she went on tour. And met Sean Penn , they married that same year and that was what inspired her third studio album , "True Blue". In 1986 , songs like "Papa Don't Preach" and "Open Your Heart" shot straight to the top of the charts.
Sadly , they divorced in 1989 and Madge wrote , recorded , and released her fourth studio album , "Like A Prayer". Her Blonde Ambition tour was launced a year later in 1990. Performing hits like : "Express Yourself" , "Cherish" , and "Vogue" , Madonna lit up the stage and released the legendary film that documented the backstage view of that concert : "Madonna : Truth or Dare?".
