It takes a short time to read and a long time to forget. It has the power of a Grimm fairy tale...Nothing is what it first seems. (Toronto Star )

Book Description

East-end Montreal in the mid-1920s. A popular restaurant is razed by an arsonist. Seventy-five people perish in the inferno. While strolling with his wheelchair-ridden father, a man furtively salvages a charred icon from the ruins. He is Remouald Tremblay, a self-effacing bank clerk whose pocket holds a treasured rabbit's foot and whose memory contains an unspeakable hell. Originally published in 1994 as L'Immaculee conception, this is the novel that established Gaetan Soucy as a powerful new literary force in Quebec. In it, he echoes the writing of Edgar Allan Poe and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Immaculate Conception was shortlisted for the Giller Prize in 2006.

This book is both profound and a good read. It's the type of book you can get through quickly, but that stays with you for a long time. It leaves you feeling enriched rather than depressed, even though it is a thought-provoking book, and a grim one.

The author is a master of tension and suspense. I kept reading because I just had to find out what had happened to Remouald in his youth that turned him from an intellectually gifted boy to an apparently dim-witted bank clerk.

Clementine's story was not so riveting for me, but it had its interesting moments also.

I think Soucy is marvelous at depicting what is going on in a person's mind. I did find myself a bit bored at times but mostly his "interior work" is exceptional and interesting.

His book is that rare combination of true insight and powerful prose.

Well worth reading.
