Product Description

‘Freakonomics meets Football Corruption’.
There is a wave of match-fixing that is threatening the very survival of sport. National police investigations are occurring in over-sixty different countries, hundreds of matches have been fixed, over one thousand players, coaches and referees have been arrested. The credibility of an entire sport - football (soccer) - is in danger, according to Michel Platini the President of UEFA.
It will destroy football, unless we fight it. To fight it, we have to understand it.
‘The Insider’s Guide to Match-Fixing in Football’ is an analysis of the motivations, the mechanisms and the methods within this modern form of fixing.
The book examines key questions like;
- Why do football players fix matches?
- Is violence used against referees and players to make them fix matches?
- How is fixing different from cheating?
- Why do some rich, strong teams bother to bribe poor, weak teams?
- Why are some games fixed, but not others?
- Why do some leagues have more match corruption than others?
The final chapter examines the most important question:
- How can an honest sports administrator prevent match-fixing?

The overarching thesis of the book is that most match-fixing is preventable. Fixing comes from key specific factors. Remove those factors and we can win the war against match-fixing.

Declan Hill’s book is a great combination of storytelling and fact revealing. The introduction sets a great pace for the rest of the book, posing intriguing questions about the nature and future of professional sports. Game fixing is explained and explored with an academic methodology, but the research and findings are presented to the reader in a clear and understandable language. What I personally thought to be a great point made in Hill’s work is the universality of match fixing, which I was also genuinely surprised by. Match fixing is a deviant phenomena found world-wide, and poses a serious problem to the integrity of any sport.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shady story of football that you don't know from TV Aug. 18 2014
By Piotr W. - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After reading this book you will surely ask yourself a couple of questions, mostly during watching games. Is it really possible for a team 3 or 4 goals behind after first half to still win the game after 90 minutes? Maybe, as sport is unpredictable. But it's not about unpredictability, but about fixing. With loads of empirical evidence this book is a must-read for people obsessed with football. It shall act as a cold water spilled on ones head. Too much money inside for the game to stay clear.
4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting analysis of match fixing July 6 2014

I found this to be an interesting book. Dr. Hill does a good job of keeping the material accessible to the lay reader. Just a gentle warning, you may watch matches through more cynical eyes after reading this book!

This book would have benefited from some careful editing. There are many careless little typos and errors, which detract from the credibility of the book. Also, in his efforts to reinforce his main points, the author is repetitive in places.

All in all, though, this is a worthwhile read.
