Bishop uses her usual skill to move interesting, rounded characters through a well-drawn world. Although this is a standalone book, there are ties with the events of the trilogy, most especially the appearance of the compelling Daemon Sadi. The author still pulls no punches in describing the sexual violence and misery that are as much a part of this intricate world as the gender role-reversals and the often-agonizing demands of honor and magic. A pleasurable read for fans of emotionally charged fantasy who enjoy both complex characters and societies, and who are not averse to following characters through their struggles and achievements. --Luc Duplessis --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

prequel to Dark Jewels,
By Paige van den Heever (North Syracuse, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Invisible Ring (Mass Market Paperback)
I would like to give this five stars because it's Anne Bishop, but I have to agree with everyone else in saying it's not as good as Dark Jewels. It's not really the book's fault, though; it's just easier to develop characters more fully over the course of three books.I read this book after Dark Jewels and found it really helped me to understand Daemon more. Yes, Daemon is the Sadist in Daughter of the Blood, but the cruelty and terror he invokes is somewhat lessened when he loses himself in the Twisted Kingdom. Then he just becomes lovable. This book really helped me see just how much Jaenelle tamed him - well, not really "tamed" because it's Daemon, but how much she meant to him. 'I' even got slightly scared of the Sadist in the Invisible Ring, and I'm all for whatever Daemon does. That said, this was still a good book aside from Daemon. Though Lia wasn't Jaenelle (Witch, to be precise), she was still a very strong, lovable, and funny character. And Jared was also a very good character, taking on some of Daemon's characteristics as his almost protege - which is most definately a plus. Anne Bishop's humor was continually present alongside the darkness, and this book definately helped me understand the role of queens and rules among the Blood better. I would definately recommend this to every Dark Jewels fan.

Mediocre Prequel to the Black Jewels Triology,
By
This review is from: The Invisible Ring (Mass Market Paperback)
The Invisible Ring falls short of the Black Jewels Triology, the series to which this book is a prequel. The characters are not as three dimensional and vibrant as the characters in the Black Jewels Triology. However, they are not flat either. I would reccommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Anne Bishops other novels, but would reccomend anyone who is new to Bishop to first read the Black Jewels Triology as it is by far her best series and most fantastic work. The advantages to reading The Invisible Ring is that you get more of a background on Dameon Sadi an important character in the Black Jewels Triology. You see what he suffered while enslaved, and how he managed to circumvent the system. This books is a good read, it just falls short when compared to the Triology that it is supposed to precede.

Anne Bishop,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Invisible Ring (Mass Market Paperback)
I love all of the anne bishop blood books as well as her pillar of the world I think this book is a great intro for people who don't quite understand the inner workings of the society. I like the concepts of the invisible ring and what they stand for, I wished that it was stressed a little more in the book but it worked. Also it gives a better understanding of the virgin night and how it works, i like the description of the mental process. Overall its a great book, if you have read the black jewel and want to understand their world even more then read this one.
