Dated humour still funny,
By
This review is from: The Jeffersons : Season 1 (DVD)
The dialogue in this pioneering TV show seems very dated thirty-five years later. Political correctness was in its budding infancy and racial tensions were eased by communicating through humour. Racial name-calling and stereotyping was acceptable within the scripted safety of a funny family sitcom. We can still laugh heartily at who and what these characters represented at the time. Can we feel a little sad that this same methodology wouldn't work out today? This was probably the first sitcom whose main characters were black. Their closest friends are an interracial couple, Tom and Helen Willis, with two grown children, Allan, a son who passes for being white, and Jenny, a daughter who looks black like her mother. George Jefferson is funny because he is so over the top and predictably outrageous. Fortunately he does have a softer side but it come out only when the situation gets desperate. His wife, Louise, is trying her best to be the obedient wife, accommodating daughter-in-law and self-assertive woman's libber at the same time. Their spoiled son, Lionel, dates Jenny. Mother Jefferson visits frequently and disparages her daughter-in-law at every chance. Bentley, their goofy English neighbour, is inserted in the plot when situations call for it, but (in my opinion) not always successfully. This series which lasted eleven years, 253 episodes, helped to break down racial barriers. It is well worth the laughs but will probably not amuse people younger than thirty who may find it irritating, quaint or silly boring.

Worth Your Money,
This review is from: The Jeffersons : Season 1 (DVD)
The Jeffersons was an awesome show that is SERIOUSLY underrated. Not many people have heard about it, but I hope this will change soon. This show challenged many taboos of the time (1970s) and was also extremely funny, notably from Louise and George dissing each other constantly. This season is where it all begins. It introduces the background, plot and characters. I don't want to give too much away, but trust me, you're in for a good time!

Just as Good Now As It Was Back Then!,
This review is from: The Jeffersons : Season 1 (DVD)
I was ten years old when The Jeffersons premeired on television and I watched this show with my family, it is a spin-off from All in the Family which is another good sitcom I watched. In All in The Family The Jeffersons were next door neighbors to The Bunkers and in this spinoff George Jefferson has expanded his chain of laundomat/dry cleaning stores and is pretty well off financially and he his wife Louise and son Lionel move into the city into a very nice 3 bedroom apartment and also living in the same building are Helen and Tom Willis (Helen is black and Tom is white) and their daughter Jenny who is Lionel's girlfriend. Other good characters include Mama Jefferson, George's mother who loves to criticise Louise and there is also wisecracking maid Florence and eccentric British neighbor Mr. Bentley. This classic sitcom is just as good as All in the Family and the top-notch cast includes Sherman Hemsley as George Jefferson, Isobel Sanford as Louise (Weezy) Jefferson, Mike Evans as Lionel Jefferson, Roxie Roker as Helen Willis, Marla Gibbs as Florence and Zara Cully as Mama Jefferson. I love The Jeffersons and I highly recommend this show!
