5.0 out of 5 stars The Kalevala, a colourful example of Oral Tradition Feb 17 2010
By Dag Stomberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The poems of the Kaleva District as compiled by Elias Lonnrot form the national folk epic of Finland, some have said.

"The ancient stories of Finland reflect our best tendencies and most eternal selves," said Pekka Ervast, a scholar.

It does contain information about the spiritual realms as told by
folklore.

What makes this edition so wonderful are the excellent readable
translations and the superb colour and black and white illustrations
throughout.

Indeed, this is a book for adults and children alike.

Cheers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Oct 20 2010
By Alan Salmi - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
For those we want a beautifully illustrated Kalevala, with a prose translation of significant stories, this is highly recommended. A nice feature is that there are passages, rendered into English from lines of the metered poetry, in the same "kalevala meter" that Longfellow borrowed for his Hiawatha poem. This gives the reader a sense of what the original Finnish may have felt like, in more modern language than some of the older poetical translations that are available. No, this isn't a translation for scholars, but for those of Finnish heritage, such as myself, who want to get a sense of their heritage and the magnificent stories that are so important to Finnish culture, this is a book to treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb, beautiful book July 9 2012
By Maia - Published on Amazon.com

I've owned the epic poem of the Kalevala for more than 20 years yet have not been able to make my way through it though I've tried many times. This prose book telling the story of the Kalevala is what I've needed to get me through the epic story of my Finnish heritage. It is also a beautiful book with many pages of wonderful art. If you've been struggling with the Kalevala, as I did, this is the book for you.
