Great remake of a classic,

This review is from: The Karate Kid (DVD)
The family and I quite enjoyed this movie in the theatre; it has action, drama, and a bit of light romance, while still being family-friendly. There is some violence in the kung fu fighting scenes but older kids (8 and up) should be able to handle it.Jaden Smith stars as 12-year old Dre Parker, who has lived in Detroit all his life. He knows all his neighbours, he likes his school, and he has lots of friends. But when his widowed mother's career takes them to Beijing, China to live in a small apartment in a city of millions, Dre's world is suddenly turned upside down. Unable to speak more than a few halting phrases of his new country's language, Dre's cornrowed hair and American style make him stand out even further among the conformist students at his new school. Complicating matters is his attraction to his pretty classmate, Meiying - a mutual attraction that doesn't sit well with the school bully, Cheng, and his gang, who waste no time in showing Dre that kung fu - not the karate that Dre knows - is the martial art of choice. Bullied on a daily basis, Dre is afraid to go to school and desperate to return to Detroit - until reclusive apartment maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who has secrets of his own, is suddenly revealed to be a kung fu master. Can Dre persuade Mr. Han to train him in the ways of kung fu so that he can stand up to Cheng? I'm really looking forward to buying the DVD when it comes out in two weeks (October 5). Highly recommended.

This review is from: The Karate Kid (DVD)
I am an adult and I grew up with the Karate Kid, so I was skeptical about this remake. I must say this movie greatly exceeded my expectations and it is a great story. It's not a copy of the original and that's why I love it - there are moments reminiscent of the original Karate Kid, but this is its own separate movie with its own story line. Yes, it is a parallel story line but it's very well done - and the Justin Bieber song for the movie "Never Say Never" is pretty catchy!

This review is from: The Karate Kid Bilingual [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
i enjoyed this remake of the 1984 original.it's a bit more fleshed out than the original, although it may be a bit too long.this one's actually about Kungfu, not Karate, and it shows the definite differences between the two disciplines.Jackie Chan plays the handy man role made famous by Pat Morita in the original.Jaden Smith(Son of Will and Jada Pinket Smith)plays the role made famous by Ralph Machio.i'd say this movie compares favourably to the original in all aspects except one:it doesn't quite have the same crowd pleasing intensity.at least i didn't feel it.still,it's well acted and well directed and looks good.for me,The Karate Kid is a 4/5
