Review

"Mike Gould is the most brilliant gun dog trainer in the world. He has raised dog training to a higher plane. Mike's dogs are happy dogs, enthused and birdy dogs, hunting fools, who love their human companions and bond with them so the two of them become a hunting machine miraculous to see. 'The Labrador Shooting Dog' is the best dog training book I've ever read-and I've read 'em all!"-Bill Tarrant, late gun dog editor of Field & Stream and author of 12 dog training books as well as the Pulitzer-Prize nominated "The Magic of Dogs." " 'The Labrador Shooting Dog' is just what it says-it's about dogs that think on their feet, dogs that will take you hunting. It's a great read for the beginner or the professional. Even more important, it touches on the spiritual connection between man, his dog and their environment."-Jim Charlton, professional Labrador breeder and trainer, featured in Bill Tarrant's "Training the Versatile Retriever" and "Gun Dog Training: New Strategies from Today's Top Trainers." -- Publisher Comments

Book Description

A welcome departure from the prevailing methods of hunting-dog training, this guide explores more humane, spiritual, and effective Labrador retriever training techniques. Hunters are led from the beginning-selecting a puppy for athleticism, "birdyness," conformation, intelligence, and personality-to understanding factors such as habitat, terrain, scenting conditions, and bird behavior. The end result is a happy, powerful, poised, and enthusiastic gun dog that can handle any challenge, including quail, grouse, doves, geese, ducks, and even wild turkeys.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but side tracks some!, April 17 2002

I think Mike Gould hits the mark training dog's with out shock collars or harsh discipline. His approach is easy to follow and very informative. His concept of building layers is true to life as well as training gun dog's. The only thing I see wrong with this book is that Mike tells a few to many stories and side tracks during a few training issues. All around this is a pretty solid book that I would recommend to any one who wants to train a hunting dog!

Mike's book is a great read. Not only are his methods of training respectful of the dog, but his stories and discussions of the natural world teach us respect of the earth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Confidence is a two way street., Aug 31 2001
By
Matthew G. Ferry (Washington, DC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Labrador Shooting Dog (Paperback)
I felt that Mike Gould's book was a positive move away from the majority of the other training books I have read on the subject. The author makes a point to establish confidence in your dog while at the same time building the dog's confidence in you. After reading this book, I realized that I was asking the dog for too much control and I was teaching the dog to act against its god given insticts. I wish I had read this book earlier in my dog's training, but I still found it very useful for an already started dog. I use my dog as both a waterfowler retriever and as an upland flushing dog and I felt Mr. Gould did an excellent job in training for the all-around hunting dog.
