Book Description

May 12 2009
Fresh off the success of his Edgar® Award-winning, New York Times bestseller Down River, John Hart returns with his most powerful and intricately-plotted novel yet.

Thirteen year-old Johnny Merrimon had the perfect life: happy parents and a twin sister that meant the world to him. But Alyssa went missing a year ago, stolen off the side of a lonely street with only one witness to the crime. His family shattered, his sister presumed dead, Johnny risks everything to explore the dark side of his hometown in a last, desperate search. What he finds is a city with an underbelly far blacker than anyone could’ve imagined— and somewhere in the depths of it all, with the help of his only friend and a giant of a man with his own strange past, Johnny, at last, finds the terrible truth.

Detective Clyde Hunt has devoted an entire year to Alyssa’s case, and it shows: haunted and sleepless, he’s lost his wife and put his shield at risk. But he can’t put the case behind him—he won’t—and when another girl goes missing, the failures of the past year harden into iron determination. Refusing to lose another child, Hunt knows he has to break the rules to make the case; and maybe, just maybe, the missing girl will lead him to Alyssa...

The Last Child is a tale of boundaries: county borders and circles on a map, the hard edge between good and evil, life and death, hopelessness and faith. Perfectly blending character and plot, emotion and action, John Hart again transcends the barrier between thrillers and literature to craft a story as
heartrending as it is redemptive.

Review

"The scenes and characters are so powerful on their own that [Scott Sowers's] understated presentation is highly effective. He still manages to give the characters depth and distinction with subtle modifcations of pace, tone, and degree of soft Carolina drawl. This is a difficult story to listen to - but an impossible story to put down." -- AudioFile

Review

“The young boy at the story’s center is a magnificent creation, Huck Finn channeled through

Lord of the Flies, and as a detective in his own right he proves as driven and passionate as any mystery fan could hope for…an early masterpiece in a career that continues to promise great things.” —

THE WASHINGTON POST

“Hart artfully employs the pattern of a whodunit to lead the reader down a twisted, thrilling path. What lies at the end, though, is wholly unexpected…This page turner will stay in your mind long after you’ve read the final page.”

—ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION

“Hart...is brilliant in the art of misdirection…But his attention to language and tempo, his descriptions of settings and people, and his development of characters and their personal relationships all add a wonderful richness to his work. It is a richness that should make

The Last Child a pleasure for any reader.”—

5.0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Read...What A Ride!!!! Jun 20 2010
By Louise Jolly TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Wow, what an edge-of-your-seat read this was!!! This is the first John Hart novel I've read and think I'll look up his other books as well.

Johnny Merrimon is only 13-years-old but sets out to find his twin sister, Alyssa, who was abducted a year ago. Disappearing at all hours of the night and at times for a day or so, go completely unnoticed by his mother who is wallowing in despair and being fed drugs and booze by her boyfriend Ken Holloway.

Detective Hunt has been totally anguished for a year, taking Alyssa's unsolved abduction to heart and making it personal. He doesn't sleep at night, pouring over the files again and again and again and in the process, ignoring his own teen-age son's needs.

Johnny is tired of waiting for the police to find his sister and sets out on his own, mapping out the most dangerous of criminals and sneaking around their homes looking for signs of his sister. But even Dectective Hunt doesn't realize just how far Johnny will go to find her and what turns out to be a most compelling and sinister conclusion will rock you off your feet.

This is a definite read for anyone who loves mystery/thrillers!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The beginning is boring but stick with it.... Aug 1 2010
Format:Audio CD
I loved this book. Actually, I listened to it as an unabridged audio book, but it was great. The first chapter or so was boring and I almost ejected it, but I didn't have anything else to listen to on my long drive to work so I stuck with it. I am very glad that I did. It is a great book! The characters are well developed, the story has twists and turns and a very unexpected ending (at least for me). I loved it. I would highly recommend it. I only gave it 4/5 because the beginning was so boring.
