Product Description

Product Description

Imperial commissar Ciaphas Cain returns to Nusquam Fundumentibus to crush the ork attacks which have been plaguing the frozen planet. But when his ship crashes into the wastelands outside the capital it disturbs a far greater enemy, one which has lain dormant under the permafrost since long before the Imperium came to this world, and could now threaten the whole sector. Faced with ongoing greenskin raids and keeping an over-enthusiastic novice commissar under control, Cain must rally his men and confront whatever emerges from beneath the rapidly melting ice...

About the Author

Sandy Mitchell is a pseudonym of Alex Stewart, who has been a full-time writer since the mid nineteen eighties. The majority of his work as Sandy has been tie-in fiction for Games Workshop's Warhammer fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 science fiction lines. The exceptions have been a novelisation of episodes from the high tech thriller series Bugs, for which he also worked as a scriptwriter under his own name, some Warhammer roleplaying game material, and a scattering of short stories and magazine articles. His hobbies include the martial arts of Aikido and Iaido, miniature wargaming, role-playing games, and pottering about on the family allotment. He lives in the North Essex village of Earls Colne, with his wife Judith and daughter Hester.

5.0 out of 5 stars Typical Cain - with everything you expect, May 1 2012

There is little to say here really - it's hardly the first novel in Cain series, so if you are interested in it then carrots to credits you've read and enjoyed at least some of the previous books.

This one has all you might expect from Cain novel - I've detected no author fatigue yet, so if you like this sort of thing then do not hesitate - plenty of heroics by unlikely hero awaits your attention, all very much up to the Cains' gold standart in my opinion..

A good buy in my opinion.

Again another brilliant read find yourself sucked into and along with Cain as he endures yet another world of danger and adventure. The world is vividly described and the characters are life like and human great read strongly recommend even to those unused to the world of warhammer

3.0 out of 5 stars you know... not one of sandy's better cain novels, Feb 21 2012

I been reading this series since the beginning. Cain is definitely one of my all time favorite characters/heroes. He's the perfect accidental hero. All he's trying to do is survive in the horrible world of 40k and he gets cornered and thrown into these suicidal missions against his will. He's on my list of favorite commissars next to yarrick and gaunt. That being said, I've never really read a cain book and thought "Damn I hope something new happens soon I'm a bit bored." I hate to say it but the most exciting part was when a giant worm tyranid attacks this thing that I'm reminded of a jawa crawler. It just lacks something... It lacks that "holy crap" factor that most of his other books had. Orks? Well guess what theres a necron base too. Nids? Hey look a chaos marine cruiser! Space hulk? Well guess what orks AND nids and they fight eachother, with space marines! This? He brings in that surprise way too early, and that holy crap factor is... not very emphasized. It's almost like he said "Oh by the way theres this. Anyways..." I feel like sandy could have done way more with certain parts, made things way more exaggerated and blown out of proportion, but instead it felt like it was straight to the point. "Theres some orks, and now heres some nids. Now over here..." He really should have made a mountain out of a mole hill.

It's still got that humor and it's memorable but it's not one of the better ones I'm afraid. Everyone has his bad days I guess. I wouldn't skip this though, its definitely funny but some of the jokes you'll have to have read and remembered the old novels (which I had trouble with...) and theres quite a few of them.
