Product Description

Review

Ancient Rome, Roman history, gladiators. This novel has them all. So it comes as no surprise to learn that Dino De Laurentiis, producer of Gladiator, wants to make the film of this historical epic by the author of the bestselling Alexander Trilogy. Set in the twilight years of the Roman Empire, a band of British Roman soldiers try to save the decadent crumbling Empire by rescuing Romulus Augustus, the young son of the last Emperor, and installing him as the figurehead of a rejuvenated Empire. But it all comes to nothing and they return to Britain where further adventures await them. Stirring, atmospheric and factually accurate historical fiction (the author is an archaeologist and historian) that certainly makes the most of the current interest in Roman adventures, Hollywood style. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description

The Roman world is in the throes of death, but a new myth, destined to span the centuries, is waiting to be born.

The camp was quiet. Mist shrouded the plains and the Nova Invicta Legion, the legendary warriors charged with protecting the last emperor of Rome, settled in for another cold and bitter night. Then, through the fog, the barbarians appeared. In a space of a few hours, all was lost -- the Roman Empire lay in ruins. But not all the Romans are dead. From the dust of the battlefield, a band of seemingly immortal legionaries rise up. They are the Last Legion. Risking their lives, they attempt an audacious mission to free the young emperor and his enigmatic tutor from the hands of their captors.

The Last Legion is a bewitching novel of bravery, love, myth, and magic. Valerio Massimo Manfredi has written an epic that will hold you spellbound until the very last page.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great romp, Mar 3 2004

This review is from: The Last Legion (Hardcover)
In complete contrast to the previous reviewers I found the book an exciting and captivating read. As our great warriors treked across Europe I could visualise every battle and landscape.

It reminded me of "Raiders of the Last Ark". I think it will make a great film one day.

An excelllent piece of escapism.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Historical version of Matthew Reilly, Jan 22 2004
By
Mike (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Last Legion (Hardcover)
The Last Legion is a fast paced historical action story and as such there is hardly a moment to rest between battles and sword fights. This certainly makes the story exciting and indeed in turn makes it hard to put down, but, unfortunately the constant action and superhuman death defying feats of the main heroes does not pause enough to let the reader breathe as much as I would like, and can be quite tiring for the casual reader.

A main flaw with the story lies in the characters who are mostly too busy performing death defying acts in the face of barbarian hordes, rather than give much time to develop their histories and give them any believable character development. The main character Aurelius is the only one who is given much inner conflict but this seems to be thrown in as filler more then adding anything to the story, much like the rather cheesy romance that he experiences with the leading female (there is only one). For the others there was little time to get attached to them and what little dialogue they had was not in anyway beneficial to their own character development.

This being said, the story itself is quite clever and successfully blurs the lines between Celtic Myth and Roman history in a way that is rather believable and clever if you have even the slightest knowledge of Celtic Legends.

I recommend this for history buffs and action junkies.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible, Jan 9 2004
This review is from: The Last Legion (Hardcover)
the only reason i gave it a one star is because that is the lowest amazon offers. seriously this book was horrible. NO character development at all, the way they talked was cheesy and at times completely moronic. A 13 yr old could have come up with a better story. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BY THIS BOOK. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
