Colin Firth does Rome and Brittania and some fighting!,
By
This review is from: The Last Legion (DVD)
As others have commented this is a bit of a mish mash of a movie. It tries to pull together several strands of history/folklore and make some sort of cogent sense of it. It is about the Emperor Romulus, who inherits a rather unsafe throne whilst in the throes of an uneasy alliance with the Goths, They rebel and seize power. He gets rescued by Mr Firth and his few men, and they decide to go to the only place left in the known world where there may be some Roman soldiers left that are loyal. This is after the Eastern Roman Empire refuses sanctuary, but they have sent some emissaries including one Ninja /Janissary type - who shock, turns out to be a woman. This provides the love interest with Maximus Romaticus (D'arcy). The `Last Legion' turns out to be the legendary IX, or Dragon Legion. History does not tell us what happened to them yet this expounds another theory. It then brings in the legend of Arthur, Excalibur et al. So is it any good? Well it kept my attention, I was miffed by the many and frequent plot holes, but the acting is pretty solid as you would expect from such a stellar cast that includes Ben Kingsley, The baddies are a bit one dimensional and the CGI a bit obvious, but it is quite a good attempt to spin a well known yarn in a different light. If you like a bit of action and some good acting for some light entertainment this will do the job. If you are an historical accuracy fan, then this will most certainly turn you off, but I quite enjoyed it despite its flaws.

A pleasnt enough film.,

A different type of film for Firth with a lot of action sequences. Thomas Sangster is great as the young Caesar and seems to have a bright future ahead (Love Actually, Nanny MacPhee, Nowhere Boy). Kingsley is always good and the young woman warrior is very exotic and beautiful. A few little humourous bits thrown in by Firth. Amazing that the Romans spoke flawless English! A pleasant evening's diversion.
