Book Description

Jan 29 2008
The 2009 Eisner award-winner for Best U.S. Edition of International Material is back in print! After his existential thriller (Why Are You Doing This?), his Parisian famous-writers crime caper (The Left Bank Gang), and his time-travel story (I Killed Adolf Hitler), Jason's fourth full-color album may feature his loopiest premise yet. Set in the present time, The Last Musketeer stars the by-now centuries old musketeer Athos, who has been reduced to a suavely dressed but useless near-panhandler trading on his now almost extinct fame. All this changes when one day the Martians attack Earth. Suddenly there is a need for swashes to be buckled, and Athos leaps back into the fray with a vengeance. The Last Musketeer is a vintage sci-fi adventure with a unique twist from an internationally acclaimed cartoonist.

Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Having already plundered Hitchcockian wrong-man scenarios (Why Are You Doing This?), zombie flicks (The Living and the Dead) and alternate history paradoxes (I Killed Adolf Hitler) for his own sardonic purposes, Jason goes this time for a multigenre mash-up that proves to be one of his most enjoyable books yet. In The Last Musketeer, Athos is still alive in modern-day Paris, a drunken has-been unable to let go of past glories. He proves surprisingly handy, though, at defending Earth after overpowering a couple of invading Martians, hitching a ride back to their planet and taking on the alien army singlehandedly. Swordplay, dungeons, a princess, ray guns and daring escapes follow, all drawn with Jason's usual sharp and colorful vibrancy. In the hands of most other comic artists, mixing up this goofy Dumas riff with Edgar Rice Burroughs–style pulp (and caped costumes right out of Flash Gordon) would have seemed like desperation, overreaching or mockery. But as done by the supremely confident Jason—who has always paired a cool abstraction with a sharp comic streak—it comes off as a genuinely appreciative lark, albeit one veined with a rare sense of mortality. You will love Jason. His stories are minimal but pack a punch. The Last Musketeer was the first of his that I've read, but I've gone on to read nearly all of his work. So good!

4.0 out of 5 stars a quixotic attempt at writing the story of the last musketeer May 22 2010
By R. A. Frauenglas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
"The Last Musketeer," by Jason, color by Hubert (58 pgs., 2007). This is the twelfth graphic novel published by the single named Jason. He is the first Norwegian cartoonist I have ever read. His latest novel, or rather novella, is a quixotic attempt at writing the story of the last remaining Musketeer. Of course, there is a twist ending & we are left wondering if indeed this was really the end of the last Musketeer.
Jason has transported his story to another planet with evil designs on the Earth. Even the notorious Cardinal Richelieu is transported to this planet, which it turns out is following his evil plans.
The last Musketeer is drawn as a humanized cat. His enemies are drawn as a humanized & tailless sort of primate. It's a unique take on humanity. The writing is straightforward & I enjoyed reading & viewing this graphic novella. Will I search out other books by Jason? Probably not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Be true to yourself Feb 7 2008
By Babytoxie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
That's the basic message underlying THE LAST MUSKETEER, the latest graphic novel from Norwegian cartoonist Jason. Once again using his trademark anthropomorphized animals, Jason expands on the story of Alexandre Dumas' famed Three Musketeers in the present day: Aramis has long since retired, and Porthos is absent, but a several-hundred-year-old Athos continues to battle injustice, even going so far as to travel to outer space to stop an alien invasion of Earth. Yep, it sounds crazy (and it is), but it works. In the style of Jason's other stories, there's so much more lurking just behind the premise, including a bittersweet but poignant ending. The only complaint I have is the price - while publisher Fantagraphics does a great job of formatting these editions, it's really not necessary for such short stories. I wouldn't mind paying a few dollars less for a lower-quality printing.
5.0 out of 5 stars Minimalist tales that pack a punch ... Nov 25 2010

I just discovered Jason a few weeks ago. He is very close to being my favorite graphic novelist. His art and stories are droll, understated, inventive, and powerful. The Last Musketeer is about a man who has outlived his times and has become a joke, then Martians attack France and he goes to Mars and becomes a hero. How on earth does Jason make this absurd premise work? Not just work but really affect the reader emotionally. I've purchased everything Jason has in print and beg publishers to reissue his out-of-print works!
