Product Description

Doctor Rainville, an old country doctor who has a deep attachment to his patients, is about to retire and is looking for a successor. Jeanne Dion, an emergency doctor from Montréal, agrees to come to Normétal to replace him for a few weeks, without considering staying any longer than necessary in the remote Quebéc village. Normétal is a town in decline whose only large employer, a mine, closed three decades ago. Life is hard there, and a doctor's relationship with his patients is much closer than Jeanne is used to after her experience in a large hospital's emergency ward. When the old doctor dies, Jeanne must decide whether to stay and accept a responsibility that comes with much more commitment than she had planned on.

-----

Bernard Emond is a world class Quebecois film maker sadly little known in Canada outside of Quebec who is revered in Europe, justifiably so.
La Donation is part 3 of a trilogy based on the Christian virtues of faith, hope and charity made by a man who says he's a non believer. All three films are superb, with the first one La Neuvaine an outright masterpiece.
This film carries on from La Neuvaine with the same actress in the lead role and she is nothing short of brilliant. This film like all of Emond's explores the loss of values that are at the base of true community. These 3 films are the best Canadian films I've ever seen, by a long shot.

Don't quite know quite why I like this film so much. The actors are good (the old doctor is great), the story is good, the writing gets awkward at times, but I've watched it about 3 times now and still enjoy it. I suspect that part of the reason is some how this film seems so Canadian, from Quebec in this case but still, to me, so Canadian. I have added the other two films in Bernard Emond's trilogy (Contre Toute Esperance and La Neuvaine) to my wish list.
