I like the Hal Leonard method books. Easy to use and quality design. Lap steel guitars are a challenge to learn. The play along disk helps.

I'm building my first lap steel, and when finished, I guess I should learn how to play it, this Hal Leonard book was suggested along with the Marin Koch lap steel construction book, so I purchased it also, seems to have all the ducks in a row so to speak, lots of songs and a CD

The best widely-available nonpedal steel guitar book out there Nov. 27 2009
By R. Rhodes - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I have bought quite a few lap steel guitar books by now and can say that this one is the best. The others just simply aren't pithy enough. You can learn several tunings from the book--the only criticism I would have is that there aren't enough songs in any one key, but that can be remidied by buying a book of songs in the key/s you settle on. I wish I had seen this book when I first started to learn steel.

Not worth the money. A waste of time. May 21 2010
By Alex S. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This book is awful. Very short book that barely goes through anything. The author must have wrote it over a weekend. It's only 40 pages, most of it filler and written in incredibly big type as if meant for legally blind folks. It wastes space and time showing separate sections of D and E tunings, even though they are essentially the same tuning a whole step apart. Same thing for G and A tunings. You can learn a whole lot more for your money's worth from the Arlen Roth instructional video.

Great for the absolute beginner. Oct. 24 2011
By Daniel Murphy - Published on Amazon.com

For under $10, this is a great book. It gives multiple tunings (which can be hard to find online), some sample licks in the different tunings, and a few basic songs to learn. The CD is great insofar as it gives the reader a goal sound.

If you know the basics of a steel guitar, or can play one or two songs already, then this is probably not the book for you.

If, however, you play other instruments, and are just looking for the basic introduction to steel guitar, this is a perfect place to start.

Good beginners book July 10 2012

This is a good book for beginners but it does help if you are familiar with a little music theory to get into it. I found the included CD to be helpful especially with tuning and practice.

Beginners' Bible Aug. 15 2011

As a slow-fingered novice i have found solace in the pacing and succinct detail of this guide. I highly recommend it for nervous beginners who shy and shrivel away at difficult instructionals. Particularly vexing are the multitude of youtube videos purporting to assist beginners in foundations. This book and real practice has been the only way for me to be start a foundation of technique and style. Best of luck and i also recc _Slide Rules_ by Andy Volk
