BOX SET FIRST RATE... NOT FULL SURROUND MIX.,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Live Anthology: Deluxe Edition (Audio CD)
THE WHOLE SET IS PUT TOGETHER WELL IN THE VERY STURDY BOX IT CAME IN. I'M GLAD THE DISCS ARE IN THE CARDBOARD SLEEVES, INSTEAD OF JEWEL BOXES. THE SOUND QUALITY OF ALL THE DISCS ARE FIRST RATE AND SOUND LIKE ONE CONTINUOUS SHOW. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TOO HEAR SOME MATERIAL FROM IN THE 1970'S ON THE 5 DISCS, BUT I GUESS THERE WASN'T ENOUGH FIRST RATE RECORDINGS FROM THAT TIME PERIOD- BUT THE FULL CONCERT ON DVD SORT OF MADE UP FOR IT. MAYBE THAT DVD COULD HAVE BEEN A BLU-RAY INSTEAD. SOMETIMES I LIKE TOO QUIBBLE ABOUT SMALL THINGS. MY ONLY MAIN COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS BOX SET IS THE SO CALLED REMIX INTO 5 CHANNEL ON THE BLURAY DISC. I THINK THE OVERALL SOUND FROM THE CD'S TO BLURAY JUST MAKES IT MORE EXPANSIVE AND DOESN'T REALLY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF A TRUE REMIX. I THINK THE MIX IS WAY TOO CONSERVATIVE AND BASICALLY USES THE BACK SPEAKERS FOR CROWD NOISE AND ROOM AMBIENCE, INSTEAD OF TAKING SOME OF THE ACOUSTIC GUITARS AND KEYBOARDS, ALONG WITH HARMONY VOCALS AND KEEP THE MAIN INSTRUMENTS UP FRONT. THE OVERALL MIX HAS A GREAT SOUND, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE SURROUND SOUND FROM THE LATE 1990'S, WITH PRO-LOGIC. MAYBE TOM PETTY NEEDS TOO GIVE ELLIOT SCHEINER A CALL, OR JUST LISTEN TOO BOTH EAGLES DVD'S AND HE WILL KNOW WHAT TRUE SURROUND IS ALL ABOUT.

Flying Live,
By Fourth Street "Stampeder" (Calgary, AB) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Live Anthology (4CD) (Audio CD)
This is a must-have box set of 4 cd's for Tom Petty fans. Petty & the Heartbreakers are a great live show and this collection of live performances captures the feel of the band in concert. Some great live versions of songs here like Free Fallin', Learning to Fly and Running Down a Dream. Not to be missed. But there are some wonderful surprises like Goldfinger, Friend of the Devil & I'm a Man. How about a 12 minute version of It's Good to Be King? Can't be beat.

This review is from: The Live Anthology (4CD) (Audio CD)
This anthology would be vastly improved if the noise of the crowds were filtered out more. Granted, this is an anthology of live music, but for me, I want to hear more of the music and less of the audiences. The Doors were able to strike the perfect balance with recordings of their live performances. The audiences did not overwhelm the music. Also, when I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers live, they did some incredibly mesmerizing and simply awesome extended versions of songs from their studio albums. This anthology has little of that. There are 18 minute versions of "Breakdown" floating around on bootleg albums which are much superior to the version on this anthology. The extended version of "Crystal River" on the Mudcrutch Live album is an example of what could have been done with some of the Heartbreakers material. Anyway, for die-hard Tom Petty fans, this collection of recordings should be satisfactory.
