About the Author
Frans G. Bengtsson (1894–1954) was born and raised in the southern Swedish province of Skåne, the son of an estate manager. His early writings, including a doctoral thesis on Geoffrey Chaucer and two volumes of poetry written in what were considered antiquated verse forms, revealed a career-long interest in historical literary modes and themes. Bengtsson was a prolific translator (of Paradise Lost, The Song of Roland, and Walden), essayist (he published five collections of his writings, mostly on literary and military topics), and biographer (his two-volume biography of Charles XII won the Swedish Academy’s annual prize in 1938). In 1941 he published Roede Orm, sjoefarare i vaesterled (Red Orm at Home and on the Western Way), followed, in 1945, by Roede Orm, hemma i oesterled (Red Orm at Home and on the Eastern Way). The two books were published in a single volume in the United States and England in 1955 as The Long Ships. During the Second World War, Bengtsson was outspoken in his opposition to the Nazis, refusing to allow for a Norwegian translation of The Long Ships while the country was still under German occupation. He died in 1954 after a long illness.
Michael Meyer (1921–2000) was a translator, novelist, biographer, and playwright, best known for his translations of the works of Ibsen and Strindberg. His biography of Ibsen won the Whitbread Prize for Biography in 1971.

Over 30 years ago, at the tender age of 10, I snuck this book from my father's bookcase & have since read & re-read the adventures of Red Orm.
The original book is now tattered beyond repair & I am hoping to come across a more intact copy to leave strategically in my own 11 year old son's way.
This is a very well-written & gripping adventure tale, with a fair degree of historical accuracy as well. (Though of course Orm has adventures & travels enough for 10 Vikings!)
Most enjoyable. *Not* a children's book, but rather a well-done adult novel enjoyable by competant readers of any age.
Should be in print.

I have two copies of this book already - the reason that I'm so excited to find this back in print & am ordering a third copy is that the copies I already have are both absolutely disintegrated from being read & re-read so many times over the last 40 years! Of course, they are both cheap peperback editions so not expected to hold up all that well, but I think it demonstrates the enduring appeal of an exciting tale well told.
Great story, thoughtful but not too serious, & often very funny - Bengtsson was a very good writer and his translator(s) did a marvelous job as well. We follow Red Orm from his days as a callow youth setting out on his rather accidental first voyage -(a plot device I've noticed since in more recent young adult "Viking adventures" - did the authors read Bengtsson in their formative years or was it just coincidence?) - to his later years. I will not give you details - just will say that our fictional Viking leads a very full & eventful life, but we willingly suspend disbelief and follow him on board ship & thoroughly enjoy the ride.

I read this book in the late 1960s in a Norwegian translation "Røde Orm". What a great series of adventures and a good picture of Viking life. This book inspired me to read the Eddas and Sagas of the Vikings in Norwegian and English translations and later to take courses in Old Norse at UCLA so I could read the literature in the original language. This book is a great place to start for a person unfamiliar with Viking culture. Get this book if you can find it!
