Book Description

Dramatization
Thirteen CDs, 13 hours

In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, The Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell, by chance, into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.

From his fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, Sauron's power spread far and wide. He gathered all the Great Rings to him, but ever he searched far and wide for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.

On his eleventy-first birthday Bilbo disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest -- to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.

The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard, the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam, Gimli the Dwarf, Legolas the Elf, Boromir of Gondor, and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.

The page says that it's unabridged. It's NOT. It is abridged. Heavily. Amazon, if you are reading this, please change your page to reflect reality.

I haven't actually bought this, but was confused by the contradictory information (it says both abridged and unabridged) so this is NOT a review, but more of an FYI.

3.0 out of 5 stars Uneven, but overall successful adaptation of a classic, Jan 23 2002

This review is from: The Lord of the Rings (Audio CD)
The best part of the BBC production is Ian Holm as the voice of Frodo. It's fascinating to listen to him in this 1981 performance and recall his work as Bilbo in the recent movie. However, the overall production, while excellent at times, is far from perfect. Some of the performances are disappointing, especially the completely flat and affectless voice of Galadriel. At times, it's hard to tell which character is speaking because some of the actors don't have very distinctive voices. In addition, the sound effects are often cheesy and low-budget. Huge, intense, deadly battles are reduced to a couple of metallic clinks that don't sound remotely dangerous. Finally, the choice to put some of Tolkien's poems to music makes me very glad that Peter Jackson elected NOT to do so in the movies. Sung in slow, operatic fashion, they come off as pretentious twaddle, almost like self-parodies in the style of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."

Even with these negatives, I am pleased overall with the BBC production, and consider it a worthwhile purchase. Until the films of The Two Towers and Return of the King are released in 2002 and 2003 respectively, this CD collection is the most successful dramatization of these books available in any format.
