Product Description

From Amazon.com

Howard Shore's music for the massively successful first film chapter of Tolkien's Ring saga won him the Oscar for Best Original Score, something of a surprise given the music's ambitious scale and determinedly dark overtones, factors that handily blurred the line between typical film fantasy music and accomplished concert work. Its sequel takes the same, often Wagnerian-scaled dramatic tack, following the film's story line into even more brooding and ominous dark corners. The previous film's Hobbit-inspired pastoralism is supplanted here by rich ethnic textures that expand the musical scope of Middle-earth and the World of Men; the Hardanger, a Norwegian fiddle, represents the Rohan and the North African rhaita colors the Mordor theme, while log drums, dilruba, wood xylophone, and cimbalon add intriguing textures elsewhere. The score's looming orchestral clouds are brightened by Shore's masterful choral writing, which infuses ancient liturgical influences with various solo turns by Isabel Bayrakdarian, indie-pop star Sheila Chandra, Ben Del Maestro, and Elizabeth Fraser. "Gollum's Song," the composer's concluding collaboration with lyricist Fran Walsh, is delivered with Björkish, postmodern angst by Emiliana Torrini, and helps punctuate the story's modern sense of allegory. --Jerry McCulley

Chronique amazon.fr

--Jean-Christophe Arlon

5.0 out of 5 stars Ethereal, Epic, Wonderful! Bravo Howard Shore!!!, Dec 15 2003

As a fan of soundtracks, this is one of the best musical scores ever composed for a movie. It is shocking after hearing it to realize this did not even get nominated for an oscar, when this album is at least as good as the previous FOTR score, which indeed won the oscar.

One of the requirements of a movie score is to create an audio personality for the movie. When one hears the Star Wars tracks, the entire Godfather album, the Gladiator opening theme, even the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon "Yo Yo Ma lingering cello", you immediately are transported to the movie's setting. That is precisely what The Two Towers soundtrack does.

From the Nordic strings and horns to represent Rohan and Helm's Deep to the industrial aggressive beat of Isengard, every track in this album is as unique and stirring as the setting it represents. Forth Earlingas is particularly beautiful and epic, and I guarantee will stick in your mind for a long time after listening to it.

But a special place in my heart is reserved for the song entitled "Evenstar", as voiced by Canadian soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian. This is truly esoteric, fey music to represent the scenes of Arwen visualizing life after Aragorn. Close your eyes, put on your headphones, and dream of happier times in the presence of someone you love (or loved)while listening to this song, and I guarantee you will have tears come to your eyes as I did.

The only song I didn't like that much was the final track, Gollum's Song. The music is fine, but the vocal stylings of Emiliana Torrini, who is trying to communicate feelings of despair and hopelessness, are truly awful and fall flat. While hearing this, you will wonder "what the heck is this doing here?" However, I am not going to hold a few minutes against what is one of the best movie scores I have ever heard. Wonderful music. I can't wait for Howard Shore's finale in Return of the King.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Journey Back Into Middle Earth proves to be Epic, Dec 12 2003
By
Bryan Zuluaga (New Jersey, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Lord of the Rings: the Two Towers (Audio CD)
Picking up where the Academy Award winning soundtrack for the Fellowship of the Ring ended; this soundtrack proves that it can be continue to have an epic sound and be original. The Fellowship has been broken apart as Sam and Frodo are now alone on their journey to Mordor. Merry and Pippin are held captive but manage to escape into the realm of Fangorn Forest. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas continue to pursue Merry and Pippin but instead ecounter an old friend returned from the great unknown: Gandalf the White who has departed from his old title of Gandalf the Grey. The soundtrack has some old themes from the first soundtrack such as a small portion of the Fellowship Hero theme. However, other themes are now presented in this album such as a much more evil and gut wrenching version of the theme of Isengard. A new theme is the one for the Rohan race which is has many hints of having an old english feel. The themes are darker and more mournful. The movie has many glaring moments of hope but is darker in context. This album continues the trend of being faithful to the movie. It is grander than the first album and doesn't hold back. It is an emotional masterpiece as the Journey in Middle Earth continues. Howard Shore and Co. are brilliant people to be able to make this type of music. Songs that are worth buying the album alone are The Foundation of Stone, The Riders of Rohan, The Uruk-Hai, King of the Golden Hall, Evenstar, The White Rider, Forth Eorlingas, and Samwise the Brave. The third album is expected to probably be the best of the three. Here is to The Return of the King

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's talk about the Music, Jun 20 2004

There are probably over a thousand reviews for the movies, but let's talk about the music of the movies.

I have to say that of all the movies, this soundtrack is the best of all three. The haunting string melodies, powerful trumpet melodies, and moving context of the music as a whole is wonderful.

I don't normally buy soundtrack scores. But, this is one of the few in my collection.

This is a wonderful collection of music.
