4.0 out of 5 stars Cool story...odd hero July 30 2006
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Lost Fleet Dauntless is bassically about a guy, Captain Jack Geary, who wound up floating in an escape pod for 100 years after being attacked by an alien foe. When he's finally rescued, he comes to find that he has actually been made into a fantastic hero for his amazing "last" battle, which saved hundreds of lives.

That for me was actually the coolest part of this entire novel: a galacticly historic celebrity, dumped into the laps of his adoring future public. It was a really inventive idea to have a reluctant hero, who actually can't stand the admiration and worship of his peers for something that, to him, hapened only weeks ago. For the marines and captains and starship fighters, the ledgend of 'Black Jack' Geary has given them hope and courage to fight their enemy for over a century.

I recommend this to those who enjoy the rough edged hero, and a fast paced, battle heavey space opera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Earth Fleet vs. The Syndics - Black Jack Geary Jan. 6 2012
By fastreader TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Earth is at war with the Syndic. Who are human just like you and me but take an entirely different perspective on what is right and wrong. What's right is anything that financially or politically benefits them. What's wrong is everything else.

What started this war that has been going on for 100 years ? No one seems to remember but the important thing is to destroy the other guy. And that's the premise for the entire series of 6 books, recently expanded to 7 although on a different story arc with the same characters in this series.

Having been in an escape pod frozen for 100 years Jack Geary has the most seniority of anyone on board the Earth Flagship Dauntless. So when the Fleet Admiral and all his senior officers go over to the Syndic flagship to sign off a peace treaty and are killed, Jack Geary becomes the ranking officer and his first task is to get the remaining Earth fleet out of Syndic space and back home.

It isn't going to be easy because the current military strategy is to rush in and see how many enemy ships you can destroy. A good recipe for dramatic fights but as Admiral Jack Geary knows not really a viable method to win a war.

Movement between star systems is via Syndic hypernet gates and jump points and it's up to Admiral Geary to get the fleet home. But not directly to Earth as he doesn't want to bring the Syndic fleet back to Earth (they don't really know where it is).

Also the Dauntless has one of the Syndic hypernet keys that must be returned to Earth. The Syndics are not aware that they have the key.

Combining military strategy from a 100 years ago Admiral Geary manages to get the fleet closer to Earth in this volume of the adventure.

This a great military science fiction series with well developed characters and space battle strategies

5.0 out of 5 stars Great first novel May 13 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This novel has everything to please sci-fi and military sci-fi affictionados. Its at once a character study as well as a study of a society at war, corrupted morals and the ideals of those constantly on a war footing. The character balance is much more nuanced that in Weapons of Choice where every character is written very boldly as white hats and black hats. Although the protagonists are clearly visible, there seems to be more shades of grey than a true "bad guy" You throw in some very "Battlestar Galactica" like scenes of a fleet running and surrounded where supplies are an issue.

Overall this book explodes out of the gate with incredible potential. The ending seems a little truncated, but it sets up the next novel quite well.
