I have read all of the on-line stories and the first book in the Gaslight series and I was really looking forward to the second book. With any series that I read, I form a bond with the characters which includes expectations about what they will do or not do and I need to be able to relate to the lead characters to stay interested in the story. In this book, Lina exhibits personality traits and self destructive behaviors that were not consistant with her personality charactaristics in previous books. I stopped reading and went to the end of the book to see where the author was going. The end of the book reminds me of the old "B" thrillers they used to show on the Saturday afternoon movies. Drop somebody off a cliff so the kids would come back the next week to see the next installment. I am sure that a sequel is in the works but I am not interested.

The second book in the gaslight series.
It's May 1889 and lovers Lina and Rhiannon are back in another detective mystery.
Lina and Rhiannon meet up with an American woman at their local Turkish baths. She intrigues them with a mystery which in turn leads to murder and the theft of a painting. The clues lead Lina and Rhiannon to Paris. Whilst there they encounter a person from Lina's past, which leads to the truth concerning The Madonna Of The Sorrows. Unfortunately, it also results in the loss of trust between Rhiannon and Lina. Can their relationship recover from it?
Another enjoyable adventure with Lina the lady detective and her companion Rhiannon. A worthwhile read that was hard to put down.

I enjoyed Black by Gaslight well enough to look forward to the next in the series, but Madonna of the Sorrows really blew me away.
The heroines I had come to love were back, and better developed. Adams's storytelling, which is always good, was even sharper, more sophisticated, and harder hitting. Her attention to historical detail was spot on, as ever.
The one thing that bothered me in the first book was the unshakability of the heroines' relationship, but Madonna challenges even this. It leaves nothing sacred.
Outstanding. A breathless ride. I'm very much looking forward to the next one. I just wish there were more than five stars.
