Product Description

Book Description

The Malalignment Syndrome describes a newly recognised syndrome that commonly occurs in patients seen by physicians, chiropractors, physiotherapists, massage therapists and veterinarians. Although the symptoms are familiar to those working in the field they are often treated independently and their collective cause goes unrecognised. In this book the author presents the evidence for looking at the group of symptoms involved and treating them as a single syndrome with a single cause - biomechanical malignment.

About the Author

Schamberger has published widely in the field and works with Diane Lee (author of The Pelvic Girdle) and through her his work is known to Vleeming and others in the field of international back pain and musculoskeletal research. He has presented his research at meetings throughout the USA and Canada - mostly at meetings of the American college of Sports Medicine. As a former athlete who competed at national level he is well known in the sports rehab field. His material was reviewed and supported by the following:

Vert Mooney MD in USA (past president of American Orthopedic Assoc)

Rose Macdonald, sports physio in UK (former head of Chrystal Palace Centre for Sports injuries and rehab)

Sharon Turl, sports physio in UK, editor of Physiotherapy in Sport Journal (of ACPSM )

5.0 out of 5 stars How to diagnose and correct malalignment syndrome, April 1 2004
By
Jan Boyd (Vancouver , BC Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Malalignment Syndrome: Implications for Medicine and Sport, 1e (Paperback)
The author has compiled 10 years of research to give us a very clear and complete picture of the malalignment syndrome. This is a common syndrome and affects the majority of school children and adults. It involves distortion of the pelvic ring and associated changes in the configuration of the vertebrae. It is also characterized by asymmetrical range of movement, soft tissue tension, and muscle strength.
Fortunately, there are 3 common presentations and the tests to determine the diagnosis are not difficult.
This book contains in depth details of etiology and the clinical presentations of these patterns.
The correction of these patterns are fairly easy to learn. There are 3 techniques for correction: MET (muscle energy techniques), traction, and leverage techniques.
These can be taught and completed at home so the realignment can be maintained independently.
The author stresses that treatment not only involves the skill of the practitioner. Success is dependent on the efforts of the patient. It must be considered a long term commitment to achieve success.
Traditional methods of treating the symptoms will ultimately fail if the malalignment is not diagnosed and corrected. For that reason, massage, adjustments and modalities provide temporary relief at best.
Initially, it is hoped that individuals be assessed by a health professional with the expertise to deal with the complete picture. This practitioner can teach techniques of self diagnosis and correction as outlined in the textbook.
Doctors, physiotherapists and other health care practitioners, athletes and the general populace will find the knowledge invaluable. It will remain a respected reference and essestial guide for all of us.
