Sam Cooke had a voice like clover honey, and he was as ingenious a businessman as he was an artist--carefully treading the line between smooth pop and deep R&B to bring both audiences to him, as well as together. Disc 1 of this set compiles his 1957-1959 recordings for the Keen label, which had tamed the former gospel tiger into a sweet, wry songwriter with a taste for crooning standards and a signature yodel that marked every song as his property. The second and third discs do the same for his RCA career's singles and album tracks, which, for all their orchestrated slickness, left an indelible mark on soul and even rock (compare "That's It, I Quit, I'm Movin' On" to Elvis Costello's "Blame It On Cain"!). Lastly, there's a disc with two complete albums from Cooke's stylistic poles: Night Beat (after-hours cool soul) and Live at the Harlem Square Club (Cooke as hard-hollering crowd mover). As a survey of the middle period of Cooke's career, this set is totally solid; be advised, though, that it skips over both his early years shouting gospel with the Soul Stirrers and the classic recordings from the last year or so of his life--which include hits such as "Shake" and "A Change Is Gonna Come" that are still, flabbergastingly, out of print. --Douglas Wolk

Thirty five years after his death,it seems that business squabbles again have prevented the legendary music of Sam Cooke from being properly compiled to present a comprehensive overview of his recording career. Apparently, BMG-RCA and ABKCO, who between them own the bulk of his masters, could not agree to a deal that would allow all of his post-gospel recordings to be included in this set. The omission of Sam's signature song "A Change Is Gonna Come" alone is reason to question this sets' release. While there are plenty of hits and many previously unavailable on CD tracks included, the fact that so many later tracks are not here makes this the most inclompete box set ever assembled for a major artist. It is a tradgedy to the memory, the legacy, and the talent of Sam Cooke that BMG and ABKCO could not come to an agreement and for once put financial issues aside for the sake of music. All of the passion and soul that Sam put into his music are now sitting in some tape vault somewhere simply because of money. And the record companies wonder why internet song swapping is so popular? RCA and ABKCO can only blame themselves every time an MP3 of "A Change Is Gonna Come" is swapped on the internet. People want the music, and RCA and ABKCO are doing their best to keep it out of print.

5.0 out of 5 stars SAM COOKE: ULTIMATE R&B- POP-ROCK SOUL MASTER April 3 2004
By Hugo
Format:Audio CD
There is only one artist who firmly stands/sits at/on the fine line between Pop-Rock-R&B-Soul Music genres and he is SAM COOKE! You take bits and pieces of Big Joe Turner, Chuck Berry, Johnny Mathis, Judy Garland's universal appeal, Nat King Cole's jazz inflections, A bit of Elvis(you know who)here & there, the warmth of Mel Torme, Little Richard's rawness...the expertise-sass-cockiness of Louis Armstrong, the smoothness of both Billie Holiday & Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin's sensual coolness, Sammy Davis Jr.'s mystique ...put it "Allindamix" and you get the most sensationally incredible, unique, distinct & seductive SAM COOKE! SAM COOKE created an irresistably, inspiring magical sound of his very own that will influence all pop-rock-soul artists to pay their musical debts to his mesmerizing artistry till the end of time. SAM COOKE's voice and performances will remain in a 'class of his own' and keep the recording buying public in a trance and haunted forever. As a music fan, if you pass any Sam Cooke recordings by, you are cheating yourself of the ultimate goldmine!

4.0 out of 5 stars Exhausting! July 28 2003
By Docendo Discimus TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This is a very good box set, complete with an entire little book of liner notes and biographical information, and featuring every track from Cooke's wonderful "Live At The Harlem Square Club" album.
But it is mainly for the passionate Sam Cooke fan...there are just too many "periphrial" tracks for the casual listener (who probably won't be buying a four-CD box set anyway).
Only thing missing is Cooke's gospel recordings, almost everything else of importance is here. And if you're really into Sam Cooke, this is the only way to go.

But if you just want the very best, you're probably better of with "Greatest Hits" and "Live At The Harlem Square Club", which between them have everything most people will ever need from this hugely influential cross-over artist with the honeyed voice.
