Marci Thompson always knew what life would be like by her 30th birthday. A cozy suburban home, charming husband and two brilliant children. A celebrated career as an established writer, complete with wall-to-wall mahogany shelves and a summer book tour. A life full of adventure with her friends and family by her side.

Instead, Marci lives alone in 480 square feet of converted motel space next to a punk rock band, hundreds of miles from her friends and family. She works in a temporary accounting assignment that has somehow stretched from two weeks into nine months. And the only bright spot in her life, not to mention the only sex she’s had in two years, is an illicit affair with her married boss, Doug. Thirty is not at all what it is cracked up to be.

Then the reappearance of a cocktail napkin she hasn’t seen in a decade opens a long-forgotten door, and Marci’s life gets complicated, fast. The lines between right and wrong, fantasy and reality, heartache and happiness are all about to get very blurry, as Marci faces the most difficult choices of her life.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Marriage Pact Sept. 29 2013
By Pure Jonel TOP 500 REVIEWER
What girl, over the age of 25 and single, hasn’t thought about doing this? It’s brilliant. But the question remains, would you follow through? This novel takes you on a bit of a no holds barred joy ride into the lives of individuals just trying to make it through the trials of everyday life. Not only is this storyline very well and eloquently put together, but Pullen’s writing style also draws you in. As a reader you begin to feel like you are surrounded by the characters. You can hear them talking and see them acting out their everyday lives. It’s an amazing feeling.

The characters in this novel are brilliant. I became quite attached to them. They were like old college friends, to the extent that I wanted to throw a pillow at them once or twice for being ridiculous. But at the same time, they were being real people. It was so nice to get to know characters who actually let you into their lives as a whole, rather than simply giving you sneak peeks into certain aspects.

As a whole, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with these characters and cannot wait to continue on throughout life with them. I also wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys romance with a dash of reality added in for good measure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and Engaging June 18 2011

At first glance, there's little to like about the main character, Marci Thompson. She's self-absorbed, dating a married man, and not particularly thoughtful about those around her. What's wonderful about the book, though, is that she grows and learns. She takes her lumps and becomes a better person. A terrific moment occurs about 2/3 of the way through the book when Marci's father takes her to task for her behavior.

M.J. Pullen sets the book in places she knows -- Athens, Atlanta, Austin -- and the description of places pop with authenticity. Her characters are real and engaging. The plot is a common enough one about love and life, but is written with a realism that transcends the details.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the time to try and read May 1 2012

I had a hard time reading this book. It dragged on with unnecessary details and the characters lacked depth. I found I couldn't empathize with Marci and her issues with her relationship with a married man. There was no explanation as to how the affair started and there was no real connection to the characters' and their emotional ties. They claimed to love one another, but I never got the feeling there was any actual emotional connection. Marci, the heroine, seemed to always be whining about how her life was going, yet never doing anything about it herself. She seemed shallow and needy and very self-centered. I couldn't bring myself to care about her troubles and that made it hard to get into the story. Like many others, I found myself skipping several pages and I couldn't even bring myself to finish reading, it was that painfully dull. I don't have time to read something that bores and angers me.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointed May 1 2012

I read this book based on the positive reviews, and I was sorely disappointed. I did not feel like the relationship with Doug was fleshed out well enough for me to get over the adultery- and I am no prude. There was no real delving into why they were in love. Her relationship with Jake also lacked depth. The book just made me angry - I wanted to know how things ended, but I found it torturous to get through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and entertaining April 5 2012

I really enjoyed this book. As another review stated it did not seem like a first book. It is well written, the characters are well developed and we get some detail about their families. I stayed awake well into the night to finish it and even spent some time wondering how their lives would have been if Marci had made a different choice. I think most people can relate to weak moments and making bad decisions at sometime in their lives. It is quite humorous in parts too. I'm glad the author has written a 2nd book featuring Marci's childhood friend Suzanne and I look forward to reading it. This is the first time I have left a review and I'm sure I'm not doing justice to the book, but anyway. It's free at the moment on Kindle and definitely worth a read.
