The Emmy-winning first season was an auspicious beginning. By its second season, the classic theme song "Love is All Around" has been revamped with an even more optimistic outlook: "You're gonna make it after all." In the sophomore season of this instant gold-standard sitcom, the ace writing staff and peerless ensemble begin to flesh out the iconic characters. Gruff Lou Grant (Ed Asner, enjoying his second Emmy-winning season) reveals his more loveable side when he discovers his son-in-law out with another woman in "The Six-and-a-Half-Year Itch." Vain Ted Baxter (Ted Knight) becomes a more sympathetic character in "He's No Heavy... He's My Brother," featuring the hilariously preening Jack Cassidy as Ted's competitive brother, and "And Now, Sitting in for Ted Baxter," in which a substitute anchor earns higher ratings than the vacationing Ted. Mary, the sweetheart of prime time, is still something of a pushover (in "Feeb," she feels compelled to write a letter of recommendation for an extraordinarily incompetent secretary), but she develops the backbone to stand up to an anti-Semite who disapproves of Rhoda in one of the season's best episodes, "Some of My Best Friends Are Rhoda." The indelible friendship between Mary and Rhoda (Valerie Harper, also earning her second consecutive Emmy) is sorely tested when they become temporary roommates in "Where There's Smoke, There's Rhoda." As with the most enduring shows, The Mary Tyler Moore Show eschewed topical humor that would date the series, and instead, mined its more universal and timeless humor from the wellspring of the characters. More than 30 years later, there is still, as ever, something about Mary. --Donald Liebenson

Description

Mary and the gang from WJM-TV return in another award-winning season. No longer the new girl in town, Mary has come to think of the newsroom staff as family. But along with the good times and close friendships come the often trying—and ultimately hilarious—situations every family faces. From Mary explaining the facts of life to Phyllis’ daughter to going on a blind date (set up by Lou!) to attending her disastrous high school reunion, it’s clear why this TV classic is one of the most beloved comedies of all time.

Finally Fox got their act together and released this second season. The high quality set in the first season is maintained in the second, but we get to go deeper into the relationships Mary has with co-workers and friends. One of the real joys of this show is that it featured a lead who was selfless (and shrewd) enough to let other characters carry the story. In the last thirty years I can only think of one other willing to make such a profound move, Jerry Seinfeld.
Flawless acting, consistent writing, and timeless in structure and content.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great show - but dvd set-up terrible !, Aug 18 2005

How could 20th Century Fox do it again ? A second time ?! Someone is getting sadistic pleasure in driving Mary Tyler Moore fans nuts !

The amount of button-pushing that has to be done to play each episode is ridiculous. First of all, there is no "Play All" option, which is bad enough. Then there are two menus - the main menu that you must return to for each new episode, and then the language and chapter options that you also have to go to for each episode. I thought they would have made improvements since Season 1 was also this way - what a disappointment !

The episodes themselves are excellent and subject matter timeless. Actors are wonderful. This classic series deserves better from 20th Century Fox. What were they thinking ? Twice now ? I won't buy Season 3 unless the set up is changed - it is such a pain in the ars !

If you are trying to look for one of those TV shows that can really describe the word "Now that's what a friend is", then look no further. As Season 1 introduced us into Mary's world as the Network TV producer, Season 2 goes even deeper into their lives, with more hilarity and eye- popping wonder.

I have found this Season to be one of the best as the stories and characters gain more depth and make us feel that we are friends. The DVD layouts were great, as to the first one, plus the extras were very informative. Like any TV shows from that period, the Sound needs to be turned up so we can hear what they're saying... DVD authors, I'm talking to you, It's OK to remaster the dialogue track, considering it's age.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I know you will to. It's sad the Networks and script writers have not watched this TV series for lessons on how "not to produce or write a TV sitcom on just crap with no substance".

Acting instructors and screenplay instructors, and any other instructors who teaches in both colleges and Universities, they should make this sitcom a required viewing as part of your acting or screenplay Curriculum.
