4.0 out of 5 stars Reloaded for a media Revolution!, Oct 31 2007

This review is from: The Matrix: The Ultimate Collection [HD DVD] (HD DVD)
Highly anticipated, and well worth the wait. This collection is a triumph to the filmmakers, and a welcome boon to the fans of great movies and High Definition.

The benefits of this collection are too numerous to mention. Everything you want is here. Special features galore. So many, they nearly drip from the packaging. In-Movie experience, commentaries, behind the scenes, Making of's, interviews, etcetera, etcetera. Nothing is ignored.

The High Definition sound and picture quality are off the charts. Bullet-time slow-mos, and Sentinel death swarms erupt out of the screen. The sound-scape is totally engrossing and immersive.

I found only two complaints to the otherwise perfect experience that is "The Matrix: The Ultimate Collection [HD DVD]".

1) The often mentioned lackluster ending of "Matrix: Revolutions"

and

2) In some instances the 1080p transfer is TOO clear. On occasion you can detect blue-screen edging that was concealed in past poorer quality SD transfers to DVD. Though a tribute to the quality of HD DVD, it is somewhat jarring to see on an otherwise perfect image disrupted by a clumsy special effect shot.

My complaints here are minor, and only contribute to the loss of 1 star. This collection remains one of the best arguments for HD DVD. "The Matrix: The Ultimate Collection [HD DVD]" is a worthy addition to any movie fan's library.

4 out of 5 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Quality... When it Works, Jun 8 2007

I ordered this box set and was able to watch all but the second movie. I was playing the discs on the Xbox 360 HD add-on and it would not read Matrix Reloaded at all. I was sent a replacement from Amazon and the same problem happened, disc 2 can't be read. After this I did some looking around and I found that I'm not the only one having this problem and that it is likely a manufacturing problem.

That being said, the quality of the HD content was great and there was a significant amount of bonus material. It would have been nice to see the Animatrix in HD - it is in standard definition in this box set.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Sci-fi carrying a powerful metaphor, Nov 24 2007
This review is from: The Matrix: The Ultimate Collection [HD DVD] (HD DVD)
The Matrix Trilogy must be one of the most significant films of our time, and is likely to go down as an all time sci-fi classic along with the likes of Blade Runner. It is obviously laden with symbology fished from a variety of sources, but I wonder if the Watchowski brothers realised just exactly how powerful a metaphor for our reality they were creating.

The central premise that our lives are not 'real' but are steeped in illusion in order that our life force may be fed upon whilst we are enfenced unwittingly like cattle - this is a relevant and powerful message on many levels. It can easily be seen that this is true on a superficial level, with the rampant rise of ultra-aggressive capitalist consumerism, whereby everyone is 'sold a dream' in order to siphon off all income to profit the few, but it goes deeper than that, and can be used to catch a glimpse of some ideas on the true nature of reality. The overlap with material such as Castaneda is remarkable, with stories about the archetypal predator who is invisible, and feeds on us because he has 'given us his mind'. In all, it is a striking metaphor for the human condition.

Of course the great thing is that, even if you don't want to explore things to those levels, taken at surface value as a piece of entertainment, the Matrix is still a fantastic sci-fi/action trilogy, with colourful characters, awesome visuals, and a solid original plotline. Taken as a trilogy, this is a fantastic piece of film-making artwork, and this is the best way to enjoy it. For me, like the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, this amazing piece of entertainment should be enjoyed whole, with the complete epic story all in one package.

Here you get all three films in blistering high-definition AND many extras, AND importantly, the several mini-film 'featurettes' which flesh out the background story. The only reason for giving 4 stars rather than 5 is value for money, given that you pay a lot for the extra discs.
