This will be a short review. Simply put, this book laid the foundation seven years ago for my vegetarianism. I have found few if any sources in academic libraries to dispute McDougall's views on diet and health. I was 23 when I began using this book as the basis for my diet and recipes. Today, in 2000, I enjoy these recipes regularly (I do add some salt back, and take a cue from Andrew Weil's "Spontaneous Healing" with regard to olive oil) and review this information from time to time to gauge my progress. While so many of my contemporaries are swelling like ticks from their childhood diets, my one adult decision to become vegetarian has resulted in a slim body, constant comments from my friends about my youthful appearance, and a cleaner planet due to all the cows and pigs and chickens I did not consume. I cannot say that this book changed my life; my decision to change gave the consequence of searching for such a book. I believe anyone with the will to become a new person will find much inspiration and practical advice in "The McDougall Program." I'm ordering it for my mom today.

From a health perspective, McDougall is not crazy and his program delineates a basic healthy, vegan eating style that can and does reverse heart disease and provides weight loss as a side benefit when followed correctly. The book contains a basic plan and a few recipes, follows one couple's case history as it teaches you how to adopt the lifestyle, and can be a good reference book.
From a reader-enjoyment perspective, I did not like the tone of the book. A little too windy and a little too wordy and anecdotal. His other book, _The McDougall Program for Maximum Weight Loss_ is much better written as a reference type book.
The "12 Days", while a good program and book to have, would not be my first pick. I'd go with the MWL book first.

I have to admit that I was unsure and a bit afraid to start this program. I did not think I would be able to follow it. I am so glad I gave it a try. I can't think of anything that has been BETTER for me. I feel SOOO much better I have lost 26 lbs so far and my energy is great. My husband even loves the food and his cholesterol has dropped considerably. Thank you Dr. Mcdougall !!! You are the BEST !!!
UPDATE: I am down 36 lbs now and still going strong.

I have been on the plan since September 16th, interuppted by a few holidays (the program does allow for feasts periodically), and my cholesterol is down from 210 to 167.
The reviewer from Marietta, Georgia complains about this, saying it is only for people who want to loose weight. She is wrong, this book is a diety to heal people. While a regular vegan diet may be fine for healthy people, if they eat moderate amounts of fats, those with health issues such as heart disease need the ultra low fat program McDougall is teaching in this book. She seems to forget that Dr. McDougall is an MD with a great deal of experience in healing people with diet related illness. While the book she recomends "Becoming Vegan" is good, the authors do not deal with healing of diseases.

I really mean it when I say that this is the most important book that I ever read. This man has made a huge difference in my life. A month ago I was at the docter because of the blood tests that I took showed high cholesteral. My weight with shoes and clothing on was 226. I told the docter that I didn't want to go on cholesteral lowering medication. I said to give me 6 months and I would get myself squared away. I immediately went on the 12 day McDougall program. I feel absolutely great and have lost 16 pounds already and I have only been on the program for 30 days. Dr. McDougall is the man. I urge every one to try the program for the 12 days.

I have purchased all but one of the McDougall books and they are all excellent. The recipes are delicious as well as healthy and Dr. McDougall is much more knowledgable about nutrition then most of our so-called "experts" are. His books are highly recommended for anyone wishing to obtain the optimum healthy lifestyle.

I am a 37, white male. I went to the doctors a few months ago because I had problems with my energy. I felt hungry before lunch and felt like I was going to fall asleep at my desk after lunch. My doctor said that I was 35 pounds overweight, my blood pressure was high and that my cholesterol was 250. He said that I had to improve these numbers or risk heart disease later in life. This book was amazing. Within one week I felt I had much more energy. I dropped 20 pounds in 5 weeks and have not felt like I was starving. My wife lost around 9 pounds in the same time frame. You will spend more time prepairing meals and spend more $$ at the grocery store each month, but it is worth it!
