Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Workman's enviable success with the classic pregnancy "bible" What to Expect When You're Expecting has no doubt sparked this guide, which claims to do for those at midlife what Heidi Murkoff's series has done for pregnant women. The company has tapped two respected Newsweek health writers for this map to everything a woman might encounter before, during and after menopause. An attractive, user-friendly format with sidebars, charts, illustrations and q&as guides readers through hundreds of pages of material. Chapters progress from the basics (types of menopause, onset and duration, testing); hormonal changes and their impact on sleep, sex, moods and memory; and lifestyle (diet, exercise, stress); to heart and bone health, cancer, treatment options and medications. As Wingert and Kantrowitz point out, we've come a long way from when symptoms associated with menopause included "uncontrollable peevishness" and "perversion of moral instincts," yet many women remain reticent about their experiences, fear aging and feel incapable of the new challenges presented by their bodies along with the rest of their obligations. Such readers will welcome Wingert and Kantrowitz's inclusion of suggestions for self-care and their positive focus on what, they say, can be a healthy and productive time in a woman's life. (Feb.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Balanced and informative book., May 14 2007

(REAL NAME)
Having read this book cover to cover, I found it to be very balanced and informative. The chapter on hormone replacement is informative and sites several large studies - both observational and double-blind - to back up the information given. The format is a little choppy but that is simply because the authors are trying to give as much information on the topic as possible. Other chapters include information on a wide variety of symptoms including the infamous hot flashes, sleep problems, sexual problems, moods, and memory. Also included are chapters on general health. The appendices contain detailed information from scientific studies and useful websites for further study by the reader. The index is thorough and useful in helping the reader find whatever specific information is needed. Finally, in response to the first review posted of this book, it did not in any way seem to me that the authors were anti-hormone therapy at all. In fact, there is a chart on page 40 in which the authors list a variety of situations, conditions and ages under which hormone therapy is either recommended or worth considering. Their message, finally, is work with your doctor and be an informed consumer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Menopause for the un-initiated!, Nov 17 2009
By
Calgary Book Worm "Jane" (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
Yes, well, sadly, I've now reached the age where I have to buy books like this, read and review them! Suffering from menopause symptoms, or even actually identifying that you are suffering from them, can be scary when you don't know what to expect, and reading the many millions of articles on the internet about it can scare the bejeebers out of you!! My decision to purchase this book was based on the article that these two ladies wrote in Newsweek, following Oprah Winfrey's show on "Bio-identical Hormone Therapy" with Suzanne Somers. They took to time to interview many of the actual Medical Professionals who were present at that show, but not given the opportunity to pass their opinions, and in a nut shell, overturned everything Suzanne Somers, who is not a medical professional, was banging on about, as being dangerous, and a risk to women's health. This book is written for women to understand what is happening to their bodies and state of mind, as they go through this normal transition in their lives. It explains the whys and why nots, and asks the questions you'd like to ask your Doctor, but in some cases, can't, or don't feel comfortable doing so. Whilst the authors, Pat Wingert and Barbara Kantrowitz aren't medical professionals either, the level of research that has quite obviously gone into this book, leads me to believe that I will heed their advice, rather than leap into putting unwanted chemicals into my body and not knowing what the consequences might be, now or in the future. I like the fact that this is a real "dip-into" book. I can refer to it easily to find out what's happening to me, when it happens, or as Pat and Barbara so readily explain, "if" it happens! I don't feel like I'm a complete basket-case having read what I've read from this book, but that I'm experiencing normal symptoms for this stage in my life.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fair and Balanced - Not!, Dec 19 2006
I'll show these women the same respect they showed T.S. Wiley in their hideous articles about her in Newsweek. I haven't read the book and I hate it. That's about the treatment they gave Sex, Lies and Menopauase.

And by the way, where are their credentials to write about such an important topic? They aren't doctors, or even scientists. They are journalists, just like T.S. Wiley, whom they've skewered.

Why bother with facts? They weren't interested in them in their interview. Pat smeared T.S. Wiley in Newsweek so that the reader would think she was a high school dropout when she (Pat) had proof that she (T.S. Wiley) went through college graduation in 1975.

Be careful with this book. The writers have an agenda and it is decidely anti-hormones and anti-anyone who gets in their way.

They are shameless, but they're in good company in America media.
