Product Description

Product Description

This work talks about spying, lying and dying. Jack Higgins meets 'Spooks' in Steve Jackson's explosive debut novel. They say lightning never strikes twice. They were wrong. London has been bombed for the second time in two years, but this time the enemy is a lot closer to home. Paul Aston, a young MI6 Agent is sent to investigate. But nothing could have prepared him for the scenes of horror and devastation that he sees. Images that will stay with him for the rest of his life. The government blames MI6, MI6 blames the government, but the truth behind what the media are calling 18/8 is more chilling than anyone could have thought. Slowly, Paul tears away the layers of corruption, betrayal and murder to reveal the real culprit. Someone who knows every trick in the book, because he's played every trick in the book. Someone that has a deep seething hatred of MI6 and will stop at nothing until his vengeance is satisfied. He is The Mentor.

About the Author

On leaving school Steve Jackson fell into journalism, where filling in expense forms gave him a solid grounding in fiction writing. From there he meandered through numerous occupations -- musician, recording engineer, university drop-out, guitar tutor, riding instructor -- before turning his hand to thriller writing. Born in Scotland, he spent most of his childhood with his nose in a book in deepest, darkest Gloucestershire. He currently lives in St Albans.

I enjoyed a lot this book. The main character is very interesting because combine a sharp mind and a lot of "regular people everyday issues" as well. I think the main character is still far beyond a "James Bond" (and it is a good thing!), but I think he will evolve in the incoming books but maintaining a credible and human side. The romantic situation was well managed and gives room to continue better in the future, not playing all the cards in this first book.(good thing too!)
Overall: Good pace, very human and credible characters, excellent additional surprises at the end and very addictive. Excellent start for this new author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Booze and brains, Jan 25 2009

Very cleverly written . Surprise by the turn of the tale in the middle of the story. Didn't quite connect the why of the (t)reason to the sexual link.
It's not because you drink a lot that your brain goes to mush seems to be the author's message.....self defense ??
