Product Description

Review

“Evokes the colour and danger of Victorian London with a master’s touch . . . an exhilarating experience.” — Daily Express

“Watch out Mma Ramotswe, there’s a new number one lady detective on the scene — the glorious Sarah Tanner — in a book that’s as thick with Victorian atmosphere as a London Particular.” — Gilda O’Neill

Book Description

When the enigmatic Sarah Tanner re-opens her Dining and Coffee Rooms soon after a disastrous fire, the gossips of Leather Lane grudgingly admit she has “the luck of the devil.” Yet when a local butcher is falsely accused of a heinous offence — selling horsemeat — it seems her luck has run out. Drawn into an evermore dangerous series of confrontations with a gang of youths who seem determined to put an innocent man out of business, Sarah Tanner’s own livelihood looks set for ruin into the bargain.

But what links the persecution of a humble butcher with a certain Dr. Stead — a leading practitioner of the strange art of mesmerism — and a desperate plea from Sarah’s former lover, the aristocrat Arthur De Salle? As Sarah Tanner investigates, she increasingly fears that the mesmerist, patronized by the highest society, is a charlatan and his latest patient, the unwitting victim of a grotesque fraud.

To preserve a family’s honour, Sarah sets out upon a trail of suicide, murder, deception and deceit stretching from the alleys of Leather Lane to the drawing rooms of Mayfair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good one by L.M. Jackson, Aug 26 2008
By Barbara Bergmann - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Mesmerist's Apprentice (Hardcover)
I have read all of L.M. (Lee) Jackson's books, fiction as well as nonfiction. His mysteries never fail to cast an authentic spell, reproducing Victorian London in all its grandeur and ugliness. The Mesmerist's Apprentice is the second in Jackson's newest series. Sarah Tanner, the central character, is a most attractive heroine. Clever and independent, she has little in the way of resources other than her wits, but she is a survivor and her wits prove to be enough. In this book, her inquisitive nature and loyalty to friends in need take her into the shadowy world of 19th century spiritualism and the occult. For those who enjoy a lively read, I highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating trip to Victorian London, Oct 28 2011

I actually had the pleasure of reading this novel while I was in London! This is a well-written, gripping novel about Victorian London. Loaded with details which create a backdrop of the darker side of Victorian London, this well-plotted novel follows Sarah Tanner, beautiful tea shop owner and former mistress of recently wed Arthur DeSalle, an elite member of society. The two become embroiled in a complex battle with murderous thugs and a crafty and unscrupulous doctor who promises relief from pain and disease through mesmerism.

This fast-paced complex novel should be pure joy for anyone who enjoys period mysteries.
