1999 may be remembered as the year of Joan of Arc: NBC created a miniseries in her honor, Carl Dreyer's long-lost The Passion of Joan of Arc was discovered in a mental hospital, and Facets re-released Jacques Rivette's Joan the Maid. Luc Besson rounds out the corpus with his stylistic and vaguely heretical grand-scale feature, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc.

Besson (La Femme Nikita, The Fifth Element) challenges established notions about the Maid of Orleans as he creates a decidedly more human heroine than have previous biopics. The story line is the same--a young, illiterate peasant girl convinces the dauphin of France to give her an army, and she leads them to victory in Orleans, only to be burned at the stake for heresy--but Milla Jovovich, in the title role, is a woman possessed. Her influences are less than heavenly; as a child she witnesses the murder of her sister by the English, a death caused by the sister's giving her hiding place to young Joan, which causes an intense desire for revenge. Yes, God still speaks to Joan, but even this is undermined, as Dustin Hoffman, playing The Conscience, questions her motives.

Cinematically, The Messenger is stunning, with fantastical sequences of Joan in communication with higher powers. Yet the graphic violence (scenes include random decapitation and a dog gnawing on a body); the uneven accents, which make it difficult to tell who is fighting on which side; and the rewriting of lore may make this version of Joan of Arc appeal only to Besson fans. Jovovich is convincing, and while at times the film may drag (at times you wish they'd hurry up and burn her), it is a remarkable and insightful retelling of a well-known piece of history. --Jenny Brown

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Version of Joan of Arc Jun 24 2003
Format:DVD
This movie rates in my top ten of best movies of all time. It gives me an intense emotional kick every time that I see it. Milla Jovovich's performance was great and it is a real tragedy that this movie and her performance has been lambasted by the critics. What do they want? Another Ingrid Bergman. Jovovich's portayal of Joan is as I imagined her to be. However, I must admit that I did want to see her in a few quiet momemts of mental clarity reflecting on her lost dreams of love and happiness. This will become a cult classic and I dearsay that it will be a long time before any better version is produced. Kudos to Besson for taking a stab at orthodoxy and religion's twisted view of history.

4.0 out of 5 stars My kind of history lesson Jun 13 2003
By Mons
Format:DVD
Don’t be put off by the bleetings of the pseudo-intelligentsia. This is a meaty costume high-budget production. And it just gets better with each viewing. OK, so the film ends with a whimper rather than a bang, but that’s the beauty of home-watching â€" you can enjoy the good bits, in this case the first 2 hours of the movie, where a gruesome chain of events lead up to the young Jeanne taking control of the French army and kicking the grim-faced Brits out of Orleans. There’s something here for everyone â€" there’s enough action and gore to keep young boys aged 12 â€" 99 interested, the acting performances are lively bordering on cartoon characterisation, the pacing is nice and fast (except for the ending which we won’t go into), and Luc Besson spreads his magic dust over it all to provide a slab of high-quality action/drama entertainment. You might want to warn your kid sister/girlfriend/wife that there is no love interest whatsoever. But wait until AFTER you’ve purchased the movie.
Oh yeah, and if you haven’t fallen in love with Milla Jovovich by the end of the first hour you’re made of sterner stuff than me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great and an Enchanting Epic Motion Picture Mar 7 2003
By Tony
Format:DVD
The Messenger was a fanatastic Motion Picture the actors played and portrayed amazing charectors in this film. The movie is about joan of arc a women who was thought to have been sent by god and others thought she was possesed by witch craft all in all it is an amzing movie the scene are graphic but it tells the story better because it gives you how life was back then and how horrible war must of been for people and life styles. The film is anouther winnerfor french director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) (Deep Blue) his great imagination runs wild in this movie with great camera movements and cool special effects wich helps the movie in its battle sequences. The music is so awsome the way Eric Serra (The Fith Element)composed the score for the film he put neo classical music in with Synthasized sounds and merried them together to get this exotic sound it is so beautiful when it is blend in with the choir music which makes it even more hair rasing and bone chilling to watch. This is a true classic in the motion picture world and I recmend you by it and not the Joan of arc made for t.v. movie because I look at it this way if a movie is an epic film and it is 3 hours and rated R it will truely bring out more of the story to make it alot more understanding and greater in its aspect. I give this movie 100 stars and 5 thumps up a true classic that should be shared to all who beleive in storys of hope and courage.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected yet unremarkable
Decent effort, somewhat uneven in quality. Not what you might expect from a Joan of Arc film.
At first glance this looks like it might be a Braveheart knock-off. Read more

Despite the historical inaccuracies in this film, I still find it interesting. Mainly because Luc Besson took a very secular approach in portraying the Maid. Read more
