3.0 out of 5 stars Grim reading, especially for Children Dec 24 2009
Format:Hardcover
It's hard to think of another book, especially for children, that is as gritty and pessimistic as this one. The author of Sounder and its less familiar sequel, The Sour Land, tells a grimn story of people of limited horizons living in grinding poverty and ends horrifically. Armstrong's books are usually intended for, or at least marketed toward, young readers. Perhaps older teenagers would get something out of the book (and there are things to get) but it would not be a good entry point to the author's work.
