Book Description

Jan. 1 2008 Workbook Workbook
Attempts to manage your thoughts or get rid of worry, fear, and panic can leave you feeling frustrated and powerless. But you can take back your life from anxiety without controlling anxious thoughts and feelings. You can stop avoiding anxiety and start showing up to your life. The Mindfulness & Acceptance Workbook for Anxiety will get you started, using a revolutionary new approach called acceptance and commitment therapy, or ACT.

The book has one purpose: to help you live better, more fully, more richly. Your life is calling on you to make that choice, and the skills in this workbook can help you make it happen. Find out how your mind can trap you, keeping you stuck and struggling in anxiety and fear. Learn to nurture your capacity for acceptance, mindfulness, kindness, and compassion. Use these qualities to shift your focus away from anxiety and onto what you really want your life to be about. As you do, your life will get bigger as your anxious suffering gets smaller. No matter what kind of anxiety problem you're struggling with, this workbook can guide you toward a more vibrant and purposeful life. Includes a CD with bonus worksheets, self-assessments, and guided mindfulness meditations.

This book has been awarded The Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Self-Help Seal of Merit - an award bestowed on outstanding self-help books that are consistent with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) principles and that incorporate scientifically tested strategies for overcoming mental health difficulties. Used alone or in conjunction with therapy, our books offer powerful tools readers can use to jump-start changes in their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A radically different approach to your anxiety March 31 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book presents a radically different approach to anxiety than other common methods like cognitive behavioral therapy or psychotherapy. I was relieved to find a system of treatment that focused on allowing me to live with anxiety NOW and do the things I wanted to do, accepting it as just one part of many that made up my life, instead of focusing all my time and energy on finding "a cure". This workbook allows you to free yourself from all your complex anxiety management techniques and just live your life mindfully, working towards the goals and values that you prioritize. Some techniques are similar to CBT (for example, there are elements of exposure therapy), but it is less mechanistic, with fewer constant worksheets, and a more holistic approach to health. I suggest this book for people who feel that so many anxiety treatments have failed them. The book can be done solo, but it is helpful to work through it with a peer or a counselor.

Perhaps my therapist recommended this book to me at just the right time in my life/growth, but I have found it increasingly helpful as I work through my anxieties. I'm not even half way through it yet and am already able to apply the general ideas and exercises to my stresses as I go about my days and have found them to be extremely valuable.

I HIGHLY recommend this book if you are ready to try a new approach to your anxieties and phobias.
