Product Description

This title tells the true story behind one of the greatest disasters in Australia's military history with unflinching clarity. It covers dedicated mailing and e-mail campaign to targeted military history related media. In 1967, Brigadier Stuart Graham issued the calamitous order that led to one of the greatest disasters in Australian military history. The First Australian Task Force were to construct an 11 kilometer long minefield containing more than 20,000 powerful M16 landmines in southern Vietnam's Phuoc Tuy Province. What Graham failed to realize was that the opposing Vietnam forces were well positioned to lift thousands of the mines and turn them on the Australian Task Force with horrendous, far reaching results. For protracted periods, the Australian's own M16 mines became the enemy's most effective weapons, causing more than 50 per cent of all task force casualties. "The Minefield" recounts the whole story of Australia's biggest tactical wartime blunder with unflinching clarity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Brilliant!, July 25 2009
By J. A. Duffield-whyard "SapperK9" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Minefield: An Australian Tragedy in Vietnam (Paperback)
Even as an ex Australian Sapper who served in Vietnam in 1967-68, I can do little better than offer the following link:

[...]

This is perhaps the best piece of Australian military history I've read, from the philosophical through strategic to tactical by an ex officer who is tri-lingual (English, French, and Vietnamese) thus facilitating a unique ability to analyse primary sources.

The incompetence of command to the bravery of the digger is all here, along not just with commentary but professional analysis.

If you served in the event known as Vietnam, or a member of your family served, this is a must to learn about the incompetence of command that caused nearly 40% of all Australian casualties by their planting of a minefield that became a depot for the NVA/VC from which they drew weapons to kill and maim Australian soldiers and inflict hurt on their families to this day.

Please, please read this book.
