5.0 out of 5 stars A pregnancy book for real people!, Jun 17 2005
By A Customer
The best thing about this book is that it's like talking to your best friend or your sister who has been there, who knows what you really need to know and who can explain it with warmth and a sense of humour.

The advice is very practical. I did not at all like the "What to Expect" books because I found every page was laden with worry about things that could go wrong (in what tiny percentage of cases??) or guilt - what pregnant woman really needs to be told to think carefully about how every bite of food you eat affects your baby? Mother of All Pregnancy Books gives you the facts, but does it without scaring the heck out of you.

Another nice thing about this book is that it shows tips and advice from real people. I liked the variety of perspectives. It was also nice to see a thoroughly Canadian perspective, especially when dealing with the health care system.

After going through a few years of infertility and two miscarriages, I thought I had read everything on the subject and that knew pretty much all I needed to know about conception and pregnancy - but I still learned a lot from this book! I even went back and read it a second time when I got pregnant the second time.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, informative, honest., Nov 25 2002

What an important topic to research- the journey leading up to conceiving a child, and the fun and wild roller coaster ride of being pregnant! I was looking for information that was specifically Canadian, that was objective and "real" in its tone, and that provided me with useful, honest information learned from research and from fellow Moms and Dads. I have found this in Ann Douglas' The Mother of All Pregnancy Books- an ALL CANADIAN Guide to Conception, Birth & Everything in Between. If you are uniquely looking for a book about only one very specific topic related to pregnancy, then perhaps you will find you need additional info. from other resources on that topic. However if you, (like myself and many of my friends) are eager to have a fantastic overview of everything you wanted to know about this journey, then I think you will enjoy and benefit from the info. in this book! Good luck to you all!

4.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed, Aug 17 2008
By

Ann Douglas starts out by telling you what this book will not be-- not one of those overly preachy, doom-and-gloom books that make you feel guilty for having a can of Diet Coke, and not one of those fluffy, girlfriend-style books that are light on substance and heavy on personal anecdotes that may or may not have any relevance to the reader (and may in fact be terribly misleading-- one such book I just read advises a woman not to exercise while pregnant). On both counts, she's right. This book had (most of) the factual information I was looking for, while still maintaining a light and easy tone. She presents some of the unpleasant aspects of pregnancy and post-pregnancy without managing to scare the reader or make her dread the next nine months. She also continually emphasizes that every woman and every pregnancy is different, which is a helpful reminder so you don't start to worry when your pregnancy doesn't match up to the "textbook" version of what it should be (it's also a good reminder when you read the list of the not-so-fun "side effects" pregnancy brings with it-- you'll get some of them, but not all). I also was extremely happy to have a Canadian perspective, since every other pregnancy book I own is American. The only downside to the book is that because it's so comprehensive, it doesn't have the space to delve too deeply into each topic: it tells you the basics, but if you have specific concerns, you'll have to turn to a more thorough medical guide. Despite that, I'd recommend it to any of my friends-- a worthwhile purchase.
