Book Description

Oct 5 2010
A sweeping, emotionally charged novel of the nature of romantic attachment and the strange allure of collecting — this is Orhan Pamuk’s greatest achievement.

It is Istanbul in 1975. Kemal is a rich and engaged man when he by chance encounters a long-lost relation, Fusun, a young shopgirl whose beauty stirs all the passion denied him in a society where sex outside marriage is taboo.

Fusun ends their liaison when she learns of Kemal’s engagement. But Kemal cannot forget her: for nine years he tries to change her mind, meanwhile stealing from her an odd assortment of personal items, which he collects and cherishes — a “museum of innocence” that he puts on display to tell the heartbreaking story of a love that shaped a life.

Review

NATIONAL BESTSELLER
A New York Times Notable Book

"In so many ways, a stunningly original work . . . granular and panoramic, satirical and yet grounded in reality. This is a twisted love story, engrossing and sensual in its own right. But Pamuk being Pamuk, it is so much more than that."
— San Francisco Chronicle

"Sprawling, beautiful, frantic, and, in the end, painfully honest. . . . The ever-crafty Pamuk manages to leave an artful imprint of his hero, kleptomania and all, on your psyche."
— The Georgia Straight

"Lit from within by humanity like a Rembrandt painting, this is an audacious, sweeping and timeless love story."
— Winnipeg Free Press

"In sum, The Museum of Innocence is a deeply human and humane story. Spellbindingly told, it is resounding confirmation that Orhan Pamuk is one of the great novelists of his generation. With this book, he literally puts love into our hands."
— The Washington Post

5.0 out of 5 stars Love in the Levant Dec 18 2009
By Ian Gordon Malcomson HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
In his latest novel, Pamuk treats his readers to a very strange and endearingly modern tale of love coming out of the Middle East. It involves an easy-to-follow but hard-to-understand, improbable tryst between a young Turkish tycoon and a shopkeeper girl. Typical of much of Pamuk's earlier writing, this romance resonates with a strong sense of cultural and social identities in conflict: the traditional vs. the modern; East vs. West; Muslim vs. Christian, the individual vs. the group. This Pamuk literary work not only involves its readers in intriguing affairs that take a lifetime to appreciate and resolve, but also provides an appropriate setting in which it takes place. The ancient city of Instanbul on the Bosporus, with all its winding, narrow streets, aging tenement buildings, mosques, quaint shops, hole-in-the-wall cafes and old values, serves to remind us of a world lost in time. Into this scene comes the story's hero who falls in love with another woman while preparing to enter into an arranged marriage. The desperate and dangerous journey Kemal takes in pursuit of his true love is encapsulated in his obsessive desire to collect and keep hundreds of little keepsakes he has stolen from his lover. These he uses to form a private museum to preserve the complicated relationship he believes he owns. What Kemal sadly learns in the end is that the relationship he has formed with Fusun has been all one-sided, driven by sexual needs and not mutual interests. Pamuk is definitely one author you want to read in order to appreciate the failings and inconsistencies of love that attempts to cross cultural boundaries. As usual, his writing style is fluid in creating a very readable plot full of complex characters.

A well told and interesting story. Only a man could really tell the story of how it feels to embark on a forbidden yet lusty relationship. I very much felt the story from Kemal's perspective was well told. A good insight into Istanbul old and modern. And most interesting the struggle amongst the main characters between being traditionally true to the Islamic religion and culture and wanting to be westernised. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Looking forward to visiting Istanbul and possibly the museum of innocence. Pamuk is an excellent story teller.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring! Feb 26 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book was very disappointing! Having read Pamuk's other works I settled on a couch to get into this 500+ page tome. I made it to page 312 before I realised that sadly this book was going to go nowhere. The main character is an insipid boring infatuated 30 year old who pines away for his 18 year old relative for 8 years. I wouldn't waste my time with this boring story.
