Book Description

April 15 2008
For more than a century, the National Park Service, private individuals, and small businesses have constructed a variety ofstructures on America's national parklands. Some were guided by the architectural style of the day, while others looked to the surrounding landscape for inspiration. In The National Park Architecture Sourcebook, architect and longtime preservation advocate Harvey H. Kaiser takes readers on an architectural tour of the remarkable variety of man-made structures that dot the landscapes of these spectacular mountains, valleys, deserts, and coastlines. Organized by region, The National Park Architecture Sourcebook is unique and comprehensive guidebook to America's most significant historic park-based architectural treasures. Kaiser leads readers beyond the rustic lodges ofYellowstone and Yosemite found in typical guide books to those special places where history, form, and natural beautyhave combined to create moments of architectural magic or enduring symbols of patriotism and heroic action such as theStatue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, the Lincoln Memorial, Fort Sumter, and the USS Arizona. Blending facts, anecdotes, and personal observations based on many thousands of miles of travel, Kaiser evokes the spirit of these places while offering a solid understanding of why national park architecture occupies a significant and unique place in American history. In one accessible, engaging, and easy-to-use volume, readers can find historical context, directions, factual information, and succinct architectural descriptions for more than two hundred places of interest across the U.S. Designed in a convenient paperback format, this guidebook is an invaluable resource for the traveler, design professional, student, or anyone interested in learning more about the historic architectural treasures of our national park system.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buildings on NPS land, but not comprehensive. Feb 10 2012
By Jon L. Albee - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Most important to mention is that this is NOT a guide to the rustic "log cabin" architecture of the 67 national parks of the United States, but is an encyclopedic guide to important historic buildings at a selective sample of the 500 sites maintained by the National Park Service. National Parks, National Historic Sites, and National Battlefields are included, organized by geographic area and state.

That said, there are some serious omissions, such as the Monocacy National Battlefield in Frederick, Maryland, Fort Jackson in New Orleans, and many others.

This is a good book in that it attempts to be an architectural historian's guide to many of our national sites, but it's just not complete. What IS included is of top-notch quality. I particularly enjoyed the chapters for Florida, Ohio, and Virginia, and learned many new things about national sites in those states. The text is excellent, and is appropriate for serious cultural tourists and architectural historians. The black & white photography is minimal and functional, with no attempt at artistic quality.

This is NOT a wilderness guide! It's an (incomplete) catalog of historic sites within the boundaries of, and under the stewardship of, the National Park Service. It is also not a guide to National Parks, per se. You won't find the kind of practical information for Yellowstone or Yosemite inherent to other travel guides in this book. Those looking for a travel guide to National Parks, National Historic Sites and National Battlefields in the United States should look elsewhere. This book is really about architecture.

2.0 out of 5 stars interesting book - but has incorrect information July 28 2008
By Mesa Verde Museum Association - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
We purchased this book for the Mesa Verde National Park Library as Mesa Verde's historic headquarters and CCC buildings are featured. The historic building were discussed, but no pictures were included of the buildings. Instead, pictures of the ancestral puebloan dwellings were shown and they were terribly mislabeled. A few of the other parks I was familiar with looked like they had accurate information, but I cannot speak for everything else.
5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate National Park architecture resource Sep 2 2008
By Park Lover - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The book is an incredible feat of covering the national park historical architecture. The writing is excellent and filled with facts and observations. It helped me to enjoy the parks in an informative way. I packed it along on trips this summer and recommend it as a great resource.
