Personal Transformation Based on Mindfulness and Self-Compassion

What's your most important goal? Why does it matter so deeply? How will you overcome the obstacles? Answer these questions with sincerity, proceed with mindfulness and compassion, and you have just set in motion a revolutionary method for personal change that is supported by both the latest science and traditional wisdom. On The Neuroscience of Change, psychologist and award-winning Stanford lecturer Kelly McGonigal presents six sessions of breakthrough ideas, guided practices, and real-world exercises for making self-awareness and kindness the basis for meaningful transformation.

Practical Methods to Retrain Your Brain to Support Your Goals

Our understanding of the incredible power of the human brain is at an all-time high, with the emerging fields of neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, and psychophysiology opening new possibilities for greater health, happiness, and freedom from suffering. Drawing on her training as a research scientist and longtime practitioner of meditation and yoga, Dr. McGonigal reveals these startling findings-including the clinically supported methods for training the mind away from default states and negativity that no longer serve us, and establishing behaviors and attitudes aligned with our highest values and aspirations.

The First Rule of Change: It's Already Happening

As the world's wisdom traditions teach and science is now verifying, our lives are in fact defined by constant change. Whether you're looking to change a behavior, improve your health or other circumstances, or simply for a way to bring hope and resilience into your life as it is, The Neuroscience of Change will help you trust yourself and unfold your true capacities for personal transformation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most helpful! April 9 2013
By Pauline - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Dr McGonigal extracts the most valuable and beautiful teachings from the "wisdom traditions" and enriches them with the precise and very reliable information and modern evidence of the neuroscience investigation in order to understand the difficulties of our human minds, our brains and our unconscious responses and the suffering they bring us. She explains also how our suffering can be diminished by this understanding and the awareness this knowledge brings.
After listening to her words many times I am aware now of many things I wasn't before and of course I feel more calm with the knowledge that this is how everyone is "built".
Dr McGonigal explains in detail, but just insofar as needed, the "default human mode" which causes lots of suffering and she gives us the way out of it by guiding us to being in the "experiencing self" . This is really helpful !
She talks about our old bad habits and how to be able to replace them with new good ones aligned with our values and goals .
Self criticism self vs the self accountability is also a very useful differentiation.
The audiobook has also very good guided meditations that are tools for the implementation of the teachings.

Maybe because this is an audiobook and not a written book many people do not know this wonderful and very helpful information so,
I hope that she could also write a book with her very simple way of explaining things about this same subjects : diminishing suffering, understanding human nature and having compassion with others and with our own selves . What could be more important in life?
Her book "The will power instinct", understanding desires dopamine etc etc...is also very good . I wonder if perhaps the physiology of the "default human mode" has something to do with the physiology of desire explained in that book.
Thanks Dr McGonigal your teachings have helped me a lot!

5.0 out of 5 stars Could not be better! July 13 2013
By Nan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I rarely rate ANYthing 5 stars, because in my view, there's almost always room for improvement. So, this reflects an exceptional product. I am listening over and over and over again to try to get it to sink in to my old brain and heart and soul. Worth every penny of the investment. If you have tried to change in the past, and who hasn't, this will help you understand why you likely failed to stick with the original goal, and how you can use the power of the brain's habit development mechanism to make change stick. It also helps lots with how to be compassionate with yourself when you fall short of expectations. There's so much more, but if I get going, I'll summarize every CD of the program. If you are even remotely thinking about this, do yourself a huge favor, and just BUY it...then use it.
