An essential element for any fisherman's reference library, Dec 12 2009

Reed has gone where few dare to tread. The world of trout perception and vision has always been a major question mark compared to the things we toss at them. With our bipolar vision and the limitations of visible light, most anglers have wondered what a trout sees in brightly colored feather dander.
It's a heady topic, and Reed has managed to add some lightness and angling reality with scientific principles - making a book that is enlightening without out being dull and lifeless (as most scientific tomes are ...)
Its interpretation of UV and vision has been stripped of the polysyllabic mathematics and is geared towards a non-scientific audience. It's reminiscent of those old high school science texts whose salient points were outlined in the margins.
Packed with important fishing information as well as theory. Segments detailing the enhanced resolution that UV can add to a textured surface, the idea of the "composite mayfly" - every posture of every bug ever seen, and how the trout may trigger the all important "maybe" - and try the taste test.
The photographs of common angling objects (flies, vests, fly tying materials) and the discussion of colors qualities in the UV spectrum make this a reference book for a fly tyer - something to keep close so it can be used often.
A worthy tome for the non-fly tying angler, as there is much about the fish that we've always wondered, yet couldn't find a translator to tell us what the science meant.
Great book.

A Trout Enthusiast Must Read!, Dec 9 2009

If you've ever fished for them you know, trout are an amazing fish. If you read this book, you will know Reed Curry is an amazing writer who, with a multitude of evidence and practical knowledge, will tell you how trout are more amazing than we've always thought. You will feel smarter after reading this, but you probably still won't be as smart as the trout you are casting to. Good writing, nice photos, excellent art, and great humor all inside this book. Enjoy!
